This book serves as a good introduction to English Pilgrim life in the first 10 years of their journey. It is delivered from a first-person account. It briefly touches upon Squanto and the beginning relationship with Indian tribes and the European. Several possibly unfamiliar words are introduced to the modern reader, expanding the vocabulary. It serves as a good start to learning the true history of the European Pilgrim life and why they chose to leave England.

I was quite impressed with this little book. This is our first year homeschooling and I wanted to give my children an in depth picture of how America became a nation. I like how the book was divided up into different sections- one about a day in the life of Pilgrim men, one for women, one for children etc. I also like that it was written as if they were telling us about their days, using words we are not accustomed to hearing, and they have a glossary of terms in the back of the book. The artwork I felt was perfect for the story. The girls enjoyed this book so much that they would be let down when I didn't keep reading, as we spread its reading over two weeks. My older daughter has also gotten the book down to read on her own. This book, combined with a few others, have really given my children the concept of life in the 1600s, and why America is so special. Awesome!

Just found out my husband is a relative of 11 Mayflower passengers, many direct. It was fun with the grandchildren to read this well written book and try to say which drawings were

We read this for part of our history lessons. This book gave a very nice account of what the men, women, and children's lives were like and what they were responsible for in the roles of their daily lives.

I love the illustrations in this book.

Perfect!

This 48-page book, written for children in grades one through four, gives a good account of the lives of the Pilgrims--the daily work of the men, women, and children, the problems they faced, and the growth of their colony. There are 27 beautiful colored illustrations, most of them full-page and all done by the author, a talented artist. Children could learn a lot just by studying the pictures. My only problem with the book is the vocabulary. The author uses words like sagamore, sachem, trencher, boulter, and trammels, which may have been part of the Pilgrims' speech, but I can guarantee they're not often used by modern eight-year-olds. She also uses antiquated forms of common words, such as "sallats" for salads and "spinage" for spinach. There is a glossary at the end to provide translations, but I have found that children are not overly fond of using glossaries. The vocabulary may be a realistic touch, but I would have preferred much simpler language. I'm still giving four stars, though, because the information and the pictures are definitely worthwhile and enjoyable.
