The story of this missionary family was very inspiring. They did great work for the Kingdom. I marked it down a few stars because it was heavy on demon emphasis, Satan attacking them etc. While I do believe Christians are ripe targets for spiritual "attacks" or "temptations" I don't believe every negative thing that happens in life can be or more to the point, should be attributed to demons. Nothing happens that God does not allow. We live in a fallen world, ripe with sin...sometimes the "demons" are just corrupt, sinful, humans, or normal events that happen all over the world to people daily, like disease, disasters, and even death of loved ones. And while these bad things are horrid to deal with, I have to wonder if they are just the result of living in a world polluted by sin. Anyway, I felt the heavy emphasis on being attacked by Satan and demons really detracted from an otherwise inspiring story for me.

Although I’m not a Christian and I didn’t really go for the talk of “spiritual attacks” or the author’s antipathy towards other religions or even other Christian sects, I did enjoy this tale of spreading Christianity (“church planting”) in Mongolia in the 1990s. The author’s stories of mixing with a culture much different from his own make for interesting reading for anyone interested in travel books.(For example, he initially struggled to make any converts because, it turned out, his Mongolian Bible translation was using the wrong word for “God.”) The story about the death of his infant son, and how both his family and his nascent church coped with it, was very touching. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in travel stories, and especially to Christians.

The amazing growth of a church planting movement in Mongolia is recounted in this amazing study of starting and growing not just a church but multiplying churches.George Patterson, who is a missionary that God used to multiply churches in Honduras writes the preface and explains one of the reasons this Mongolian movement was effective. "Many church planters follow such a long list of things to do to start a church that they fail to give top priority to the few essential activities, and end up doing so many things that the key, pivotal elements of church planting a buried in the plethora of work items."This simplicity of church was a key to the growth and multiplication of house churches in this difficult area. The author, Brian Hogan, shares the two reasons why church planting movements do not take place: "One, what we are doing is too complex" and "Two, we don't trust the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer" (251).This prioritizing of the basics is seen throughout the book. Here are some examples:First, they effectively discipled the new believers which led to growth by multiplication.Second, they trained leaders in the local church and thus avoided separating them from ministry in an ivory tower academic context (210).Third, they passed the baton to Mongolian leadership at just the right time. Some would say that they should have never passed the baton but let the locals carry the baton from the beginning. However, this did lead to solid growth both in doctrine and life. Part of their problem was the fact that the initial conversions were among teen-age girls (95).Fourth, they were able to transition from the teen-age girl substance of the beginning church to whole families in a way that made the church much more reflective of the Mongolian culture as a whole.Fifth, they understood the importance of small holistic small groups for solid growth rather than large "celebration" type gatherings. They learned the importance of contextualization and avoiding cultural baggage from the Western approach to church. This led to the multiplication of churches rather than one large church and penetrated the culture and made discipleship more effective (124-126).As a missionary family they went through some very difficult situations including the sudden death of a new born son. Even this terrible suffering was used by God as they modeled for the Mongolians "Grieving with Hope" (title of the epilogue 247-50).I would recommend that all church planters read this book even if they are planting a church in a more urban or western context. Lessons learned through real life history are a powerful means of church planter training.

What an eye opener! My son has recently become a missionary and it has been very hard with him and his family being gone from my life! I miss my grandsons, son and daughter-in-law tremendously! But through the story of Brian Hogan and his family, the Holy Spirit has opened my eyes and heart to a whole new world of missionaries and what they are all about. It's not about me. It's about those precious lost people in the world who need to know Jesus. God bless the missionaries who are willing to give up their comfort and go for the sake of the kingdom! This true story brought laughter, tears, and much awareness into my "tunnel vision" mind. I even found myself praying for the Hogan Family as I read of their struggles in Mongolia. I had to remind myself several times that these struggles are long gone as the book was set in the 1990's. However, I feel like I know them and still want to pray for them as they work for The Lord here in the states. May God bless their currant work and continue to bless the Mongolians they served 2 decades ago. Great story, great book!

Writing with the head of a scholar and the heart of a poet, Red Pine creates a rare gem to behold, in your hands, in your heart, for years to come. There is so much material in it, along with so much beauty in the style and language, I find myself going over the same passages again and again just to savor them. Made for slow reading, but then speed is just not the right metric here. Thank you, Bill Porter, for sharing your wisdom with us. Bowing in gratitude.

Thank you Red Pine for such clarity.I also love your book, “The Zen Teaching of Bodidharma” which I discovered in 1990 and is my main book for extended travel.Your clear mind and extensive research has nourished my practice deeply!

I have 5 other copies of this sutra and this is my favorite. Pine reads Sanscrit and Chinese, which most other writers cannot. I believe his translation is the best. His commentaries are outstanding. Continued study of this book increases my understanding of this most important sutra. First understanding, then knowledge, and finally wisdom.

Red Pine's translation of The Heart Sutra is an excellent guide for studying the Sutra. He provides solid background material and then moves into the Sutra, line by line, quoting from various authors over the centuries, and adding a few of his own comments. He also references other authors for further study. His translation provides a fresh view of this challenging Sutra, while still being able to be chanted smoothly.

I finally understand the heart sutra, after unaccountably loving it for many years. Excellent translation and commentary.

Given the prominence and role of the Heart Sutra in contemporary Buddhism, it would have been easy to ignore its origins. In Japan, for instance, it is probably the most chanted sutra, and many lay people have it memorized. Red Pine dutifully uses his introduction to review the existing scholarship to locate where the sutra may have been composed and why, even speculating on possible purposes (e.g., a summary of other Buddhist teachings or texts). He provides historical context to other sutras and points out that different translations in Chinese - let alone English - further confuse what a true Heart Sutra may look like. Finally, Red Pine notes that other Buddhists and scholars have been commenting on it for centuries (there are 80 extant Chinese commentaries that predate modern times).Red Pine does his commentary line by line. In so doing, he gives us an excellent overview of Buddhism, its core concepts, and plenty of nuggets for meditation. For instance, in analyzing line 11 of his translation, he reminds us of the often paradoxical nature of Buddhist teaching. "If ... all dharmas are empty of self-existence, impermanence no longer applies, as they neither come into being nor do they cease to be." That is, if there is no beginning or end, then there can be no impermanence. This is reminiscent of Joshu's dog: just like Buddha nature is not something that can be had, to say it is not there denies the reality. The logical mind freezes. Kensho. Great stuff. My only fault is the translation itself. I prefer the one used by the Rochester Zen Center. Incomplete though it may be, it is great for chanting.

The Heart Sutra is a gift, a gem. I don't know how to better express my opinion.Red Pine (Bill Porter) has crafted a translation and analysis of the Prajnaparamita Sutra (Heart Sutra) that surely will stand the test of time. It is readable, incisive, and edifying without being lofty. For those unfamiliar with Buddhism, the Heart Sutra is the kernel of the philosophy, and requires careful consideration to penetrate the many layers of intent. This book gives all readers background material needed to begin understanding the Sutra. The Prajnaparamita Sutra concentrates the focus on emptiness. This is basic to Zen sitting, or zazen ("sitting concentration"). The short form of the Sutra itself is quite short - 35 lines of English text, not quite two pages in this trade-format book - stating the basics without elaboration. The great value of The Heart Sutra is the breadth and depth of material added by Red Pine on a line-by-line basis.Nota bene: This book is NOT a substitute for instruction, but serves to deepen the readers' understanding of the Sutra. Readers who want to learn ABOUT Zen and sitting should read The Art of Just Sitting, Second Edition: Essential Writings on the Zen Practice of Shikantaza. Those who want to learn HOW to sit should find a teacher who is an accredited sensei.

Red Pine draws on his impeccable grounding in original Sanskrit, Pali and Chinese texts, his understanding of history, and a long-time practitioner’s experience to gift us with this multi-layered study of this central Mahayana Buddhist sutra

Please understand that I am not reviewing Miss Austen's works but rather this particular presentation of her books. The set is lovely to look at and will look nice on a shelf or desk just because they are pretty. The binding is good and I really like it that each book has a ribbon marker so I won't be always misplacing my bookmarker! As many have stated, it is a very big shame that the stickers are on the back of each book. I am assuming that maybe because mine came in the winter months the sticker came off fairly easily, leaving no sticky residue. But it is obvious on every book that there was a sticker. Some show a dark mark the size and shape of the sticker. But most of them took off some of the ink on the beautiful covers when the sticker came off. So you have a mark and some of the ink is missing on many of them. This needs to be rectified. ( I have posted photos of the backs of some of the books.)The only other complaint I have at this point is that the case is just a tad too tight. Just a couple of centimeters added to the width and height would make it so much easier to remove a book from the case. As it is now, I have to turn the box over and dump the books out enough so that I can grasp the spine of the one I want to pull it out. I can only see this being more of a problem in the future as books tend to expand when read.I am interested in some of the other sets they offer, but right now would hesitate to spend that much money considering the flaws I mentioned.

I gave it four stars because it was a shrink wrapped box set, but each book had a price sticker on it. This wouldn't be a problem except that when removing the stickers, they took off the pink coloring on the book cover. I got these because the covers are beautiful, so it made me mad that a few of them are ruined now.

Beautiful set with everything she wrote. I'm enjoying the volumes very much. I wish those stupid stickers hadn't been on the backs of the books, though, because when you take them off they ruin some of the cover design and leave a mark where they were taken from.

This book seems to be someone's summarized version of Jane Austen's work. Each chapter appears to be shorter and has lost a lot of the descriptive language and detail from the original book. The cover is very pixilated, the text is probably a 12 or 14 point font that looks like something I can print from home. It also claims to have been printied in CA the same day I ordered it.Now I know why it was so inexpensive, yet still a complete waste of my money since I actually wanted to read the entire work of Jane Austen.

This is another of the books in the Austen Project, modern authors retelling the Austen classics. This one even has the same name as the original.Val McDermid is a successful author of crime thrillers, none of which I have read. She accepted the challenge of updating Northanger Abbey and chose to make the heroine, Catherine Morland, into a Twilight-loving, vampire-obsessed teenager. Since I'm not a big fan of Twilight or vampires in general - although I quite like Dracula - that artistic choice made it very hard for me to like Cat, as she is called in the book. She seemed utterly shallow and without substance, and since the book is all about her, that left the plot feeling quite flimsy and frivolous for me.So, we have Cat Morland, sheltered, homeschooled daughter of a vicar and his wife from the little village of Piddle Valley in Dorset. It is a happy, loving family with four children, a brother older than Cat and two sisters who are younger. The family has quite straitened financial circumstances and there's not much chance for travel, so it is very exciting for Cat when their childless neighbors, the Allens, invite her to travel with them to Edinburgh for the summer Fringe Festival. When they arrive in Edinburgh, Cat's world explodes with possibilities. She essentially takes the city by storm. She meets Bella Thorne who, almost instantly, becomes her BFF. Then she finds that Bella has her cap set for Cat's brother, James, who is a school friend of her brother, and she is equally determined that Cat will be paired with that odious brother, Johnny.Soon, Cat also meets handsome Henry Tilney at a dance and loses her heart to him, and she also meets his sister Eleanor, who invites her to come and visit them at their family home, Northanger Abbey. Cat looks at online pictures of Northanger Abbey and is entranced by the idea of it because it looks like a place where vampires might dwell. Arriving at the Abbey, she imagines that the Tilneys are a family of vampires, but the thought doesn't scare her; it only excites her.McDermid actually follows the original plot pretty closely, just changing carriages to cars and letters on paper to emails and texts and girls obsessed with The Mysteries of Udolpho to girls obsessed with Twilight and Herbridean Harpies. She makes a stab at updating the language of the teenagers, but that fell flat for me. Words like "totes" or "amazeballs" - I mean, are those even words? And do teenagers really talk like that? I don't have much opportunity to interact with teenagers these days, so perhaps I'm not the best judge...I really don't have the heart to summarize the entire plot here. There was no one in the story that I felt a connection with, and so even though the book was fairly short, reading it felt like a bit of a slog. I found myself missing the witty dialogue and beautiful language of the original. In fact, I think this book would probably be enjoyed more by someone who has never read the original and so has nothing with which to compare it. I can imagine that it might appeal to the readers of Twilight, for example, and if it could make those readers sufficiently curious about the writings of Austen to pick up the original and read it, that would be the best possible outcome.

The golden edged pages are so pretty and compliment the baby blue and gold cover! This is a very thick book and the print is somewhat small but to be expected since it is so thick. I only wish it had at least a few illustrations, at least at the beginning of each novel. So classic and elegant looking!

Emma is one of Austen's and my least favorite characters. Most matchmakers are bossy types and are universally in the MYOB (mind your own business) crowd. Sometimes she is definitely mean-spirited. She could have more positively spent her time perfecting her musicianship or working on her artistic talent. The illustrations were a reminder of the dress of the time and the households as well.It was fun to compare the movies available as well. The British BBC production definitely had the better casting. How would you feel about marrying someone 16 years your senior? The women of Austen's time had some issues we would not cope with as well. The book is definitely an eye-opener on Austen as an early Women's Lib advocate. We don't realize how good we have it. We can do anything we want these days.

If you want to preserve classics and like to read with a cup of a tea and a cozy chair, these are for you. Simple cloth binding is enhanced with vintage-style decoration. Thick paper and good, easy to read print. These books are comfortable to read, look great on the shelf.
