Suddenly talons wrapped around Sunny’s snout and shoulders and she was yanked into the dark trees. Book five of Wings of Fire, The Brightest Night, starts out with Sunny getting kidnapped by NightWings. The dragon tribes live on Pyrrhia, a land divided into tribal lands. Sunny is a little golden dragon from the SandWing tribe. She is very optimistic and always thinks things will turn out for the best. She is cleaver and funny. Sunny makes friends with everyone, even those who might be her enemies. She is good at persuading others to follow what she says. After being kidnapped from the rainforest, Sunny hears the NightWings’ secret plan to sell her and her friends, who are dragonets of destiny. She escapes and follows them to make sure their plan fails. The NightWings go into the Scorpion Den, in the Sand Kingdom. They want to meet with Thorn, the leader of the city, to contact a buyer for Sunny and her friends. Sunny follows them into the city. Thorn doesn’t like their plan and throws the NightWings in prison. Sunny finds out that Thorn is her mother, but is soon captured by Adix, who is a traitor of Thorn. He takes her to the evil queen, Burn. Thorn attacks Burn’s stronghold with a small army, letting Sunny escape.Sunny meets up with her friends in the rainforest. They devise a plan to stop the war raging between the dragon tribes and choose the new queen, as the prophecy says, and try to figure out the mystery of the murdered Queen Oasis. This book has a good message about not letting someone lay out your life for you, that you can choose your own path. Sunny and her friends are believed to be the chosen dragons of a prophecy and at first feel like they have to fulfill the prophecy. But, they find out the prophecy isn’t real and that they don’t have to follow the prophecy. Many of the dragons in the different tribes are looking forward to the prophecy being fulfilled. So, Sunny convinces her friends to follow the path of the prophecy for those dragons who believe. The dragon tribes want the war to end and Sunny and her friends can make that happen. I think it is important to do what you think is right instead of just letting someone else choosing your path for you. Sunny and her friends make their own destiny while choosing to help the dragon tribes and those who believe in the prophecy.I strongly recommend this book, for ages 8 year and older, if you like fantasy and dragons. You will never want to put the book down. All the books in the series are about 300 pages long. It is a good action fantasy with a constant fun story. I would give this book 5 stars.

Contrived. I loved the previous four books, which made this one all the more disappointing. Sunny's reasoning that she should follow the big bad dragons who are on their way to tattle on her friends is selfish and poorly reasoned. Or I should say conveniently reasoned. Even after she gains the super magical item that would be so disastrous if it fell into the wrong claws, she puts everyone at risk by taking it with her to follow the three bad dragons. And to bury it near a den of thieves? Seriously? Sooo convenient that no one found it, even after someone witnessed her on the dune. Sunny's internal struggle is that her friends don't think she can do anything. Yet every obstacle she faces in this book, HER book, is conveniently handled for her. Her imprisonment? Please. Sunny's way of thinking: "Don't consider escaping until after I'm locked up in a bad cell. Oh, look, they locked the door. Too bad I can't escape. But no need to worry. My jailer will just let me out to wander around and talk to my guard like a friend." I never felt that she was in any danger because everything just worked out around her, unlike the previous books where each dragonet had to learn and grow through his or her own trials. And - spoiler - at the end, for being a team of dragonets, Sunny doesn't discuss the choice of the Queen with her dear friends. She just makes it. The big decision that she feels so strongly was meant to be made by all of them, she jumps in and chooses alone. And gee, eye-roll about who she chooses. Contrived. Too convenient. A disappointment of a character I'd been anticipating getting to know for 4 books. I honestly felt like the author just got tired of trying and threw together whatever worked to make the easiest path happen for Sunny just to be done with the story. That said, even though during my read through I ranted about Sunny's gag-worthy responses to events and the nothing-bad-will-really-happen atmosphere, the book was still well written from a language perspective. It's still a well developed world for these dragons to engage in. It was that, and the need to see the other dragonets again, that kept me reading. I was glad to see the other four again before getting to close the book on Sunny. I can't say the finale was completely satisfying, but it did the job.
