This is one of those books whose titles grabbed me before anything else. I'm pleased to report that the rest of the book is just as evocative as that title. In Maoist China, twelve year old Ah Liam reports his grandmother for vandalizing a portrait of Chairman Mao and so starts a terrible chain of events. The family attempts to flee China, but in a heartbreaking plot twist, they are can only take one child. The novel follows the consequences of the devastating choice, Seok Koon (the mother) makes. The story is dramatic and despite bearing the burden of multiple intersecting characters and subplots, it remains fast-paced. From a third person POV, Chen shows great mastery of a child's voice and San San's character anchors the story excellently. This sophomore novel lucidly captures the plight of the girl child, Chinese history and heartbreaking betrayal. Utterly mesmerizing from the first sentence, Bury What We Cannot Take paints a portrait of family shaken by a grave mistake, the results of which will linger after the story ends. This is what makes the book spectacular.Kirstin Chen's Bury What We Cannot Take is unsettling, vivid and compulsively readable. Highly recommended.Â
Fascinating story about a difficult time in China's history. Interesting insights into the culture and politics of the times. I honestly felt like I was sucked right into the story, and felt the emotions and turmoil of the characters. This is a book I am sure I will be reading again and again.
Ah, that poor family. And, my gosh, the resiliency and courage of San San. This book painted a terrible picture of communism in China when the borders closed and the awful choices a family might have to make to get out. I flew through this book and gladly recommend it.
What I found most interesting about this book is that it shows what it was like to live in the times of Mao and how the people were indoctrinated to believe he was the greatest leader on Earth and they could not live in a better place. But not everybody was so easily deceived. Bee Kim, grandmother of San San and Ah Liam, angry at what they had to endure destroyed the picture of Mao that every house was forced to have. Ah Liam reported her to the authorities and their life would change forever. They had to flee their home and try to make it to Hong Kong. Seok Koon, her daughter-in-law, had to get permits to leave the country alleging that they had received a letter from her husband in Hong Kong, telling her that he was very sick, had a few days to live, and wanted to see them for the last time. However, these permits were very difficult to get and in the end she was only given 4, for fear that they would not return to the country. One of them would have to stay behind. She knew she had to make this terrible decision, but how could she? An agonizing decision with terrible consequences that will haunt her for a very long time.
This was a beautifully immersive story and one I know I’ll be thinking about for a long time. Using multiple POVs, Kirstin Chen depicts a family torn apart by unthinkable circumstances. The way she reveals each character’s truths and struggles and triumphs and losses is masterful, elevating the story past the usual question of “what would I do?†to arrive at a deeper, more complex understanding: that there are moments in life which rob us of choice, leaving us in their wake trying to somehow get through it.
Although it is historical fiction, this book gives you insight into what was going on with the people of China during the beginning of the communist take over, and the subsequent border closings.
A completely satisfying story against the backdrop of a little understood time and place in history. The characters and their dilemmas are completely engrossing. Chen captures the complexity of family life so well, then layers on the displacement of one family member and anguish of others. Couldn’t put this novel down and was sad when I finished it.
Story of a German born English resident follows his Jewish love into Nazi Germanyin an attempt to rescue her from the Nazi's. In the process he was himself corruptedin his own eyes. How could it have been otherwise?
