As a professional photographer I read a lot of different types of books on photography, mostly to recommend reading material to the members of my local camera club. Tabletop Photography gets an A+ recommendation from me. The author (his name is just too long to keep typing) writes in a simple, easy to follow style. Not only does he offer suggestions on what to do but how to do it and make some of the equipment yourself. The act of making your own equipment and then utilizing it to create new and exciting images will for many open a new adventure in photography. Read it, employ the projects, succeed...
Beautifully illustrated and clearly written. I would have posted 5 stars but the author does not IMO point out the alternative technique of using a light tent. Most methods used by the author are relatively bulky and time consuming. I in fact used several of the methods and got good results, but my results were even better with a $20 light tent with a flash remote on each side of the tent. Takes minutes to set up and costs next to nothing. So for the at home hobbyist, my advice is to save your money and get a light tent.
This is the first book on close-up small product photography that I've seen that is really very useful. I've bough a couple of others on the same subject and mostly wished I had not - often really just a portfolio of the author's photographic talent.This book without being condescending starts at the absolute basics with a few sweet pages on focal length, aperture settings etc and takes it from there quickly getting into the details of many practical tips with illustrations and simple ideas that will pay off.
Bought this for my nephew who had recently started shooting some good outdoor pictures. I thought this would be good gift for him. He loved the book and now he has shot some awesome indoor table top and still life pictures also. I feel so happy for buying this book for him. I'm sure he is happier than me!
Basic info on tabletop photography. Spends a lot of time on the basics of photography so is really more geared towards beginners and doesn't spend enough time on higher level techniques to make it worth it to anyone who isn't just getting into photography. A good read for those, a pass for everyone else.
I'm a professional photographer of long standing and have always enjoyed building my own tools and creating my own solutions. I was familiar with much of what was discussed here, but the couple of new ideas I picked up were worth FAR more than the cost of the book.Well presented and well illustrated!
Wonderful educational and reference book chock-full of useful principles and techniques. The writing and illustrations are extremely clear and useful. I highly recommend this book if you are learning tabletop photography and want to use small flashes rather than big strobes.
Being new to tabletop photography, I needed a knowledge kick-start so I could make good choices and understand the mistakes I'll probably make. This book fills that need excellently.
