Review

"The greats like Schoonmaker and (the late) Coates are here. But so are the current blockbuster cutters like Eddie Hamilton . . . their methods and style are as individual as the individual themselves. And you as a reader will find yourself muttering ‘Absolutely’ or ‘Nope…that does not work for me.’ And you find yourself seated at the table as this masterclass is going on. And it’s a really big freakin’ table." ―Book Review, by Jonathan Dowler, Canadian Cinema Editors "Steve Hullfish has interwoven great swathes of interview and made them flow like a well-constructed movie. You get concentrated information fired at you from the most eclectic, dynamic range of editors from all genres, mediums and nationalities . . . Most editors, when asked how they do what they do (a question we are all perhaps a little tired of now) answer ‘Instinct!’ This marvellous book is the first I’ve read (sourced from many horses’ mouths rather than books written from a single perspective) to refute that. There are concrete techniques to learn here as well as aesthetic considerations that stay our hand or entice an ‘I’ and an ‘O’ on a favoured shot. There is something for every editor on every page whether they’re new to the industry or, like myself, with many decades behind me." ―Book Review by Alan Miller, GBFTE’s First Frame, Spring 2018 Art of the Cut may indeed be the essential tool for the cutting room. Here is a reference where you can immediately see how our contemporaries deal with the complexities of editing a film. In a very organized manner he guides the reader through approaching the scene, pacing and rhythm, structure, storytelling, performance, sound design and music. I am placing this book on my shelf of editing books and I urge others to do the same. ―Jack Tucker, ACE "In addition to having ready access to the experiences of so many editors in one volume, the book also makes great use of its formatting, structure and layout to enhance the learning experience and make sure you take away some practical wisdom." ―Jonny Elwyn, Film Editor

This book is a treasure trove of practical information on the art and technique of film editing. In addition to the Technique of Film Editing, Eisenstein's Essays and In the Blink of an Eye this book will have a place of honor on your bookshelf, with an exception: you will find this book getting a lot more wear and tear because it is information you will use day in and day out as you progress in your editing career.Starting with the mindset of setting up and approaching a project and going through to the philosophical reasonings why one might make certain choices, Steve Hullfish did a tremendous job crafting an immensely practical book and my gratitude goes out to the men and women who shared their hard-won knowledge to make the path easier to follow for all of us.Technology always marches relentlessly on, but just as the 5 Cs of Cinematography is just as relevant today as it was almost 70 years ago, I believe this book will stand the test of time and be a continual source of inspiration and reference for practitioners of "the invisible art."

If you have read Steve's interviews at ProVideo Coalition you know this book has a lot to offer. To every lover of the film editing craft, this book will inspire you and leave you with priceless knowledge that you will actually use on the editing room on day to day situations. It has a great arrangement of multiple point of views from the very best of the industry today. Which is a valuable thing if you consider that assistants are not learning that much on their jobs directly from editors. It’s like having the chance to learn and listen from all of them while catching the similarities and differences between their approaches to the job. It will increase your confidence to make your own decisions and make great ones. You can see the love Steve H. has for the craft, how he scrutinize and elicit from editors the cream of the crop, not by only asking the right questions, but also because he is trying to absorb as much as possible from such great talents. I mean, there is a lot people out there making interviews, but you end up getting disappointed… and when you have experience, you want something more, and Steve does that from time to time.If you love this craft, you will be hooked since the beginning and I almost crumble (literally) when he was talking about the mission of this book, the sacrifices and other thoughts on the introduction… along with a reminiscence to Lupita Nyongo’s speech at the oscars. I mean, you will feel the passion and dedication, and be grateful for it.

I came across Steve Hullfish through his blog and thought, 'Thank god, someone who asks the questions that I am interested in!' That same day I saw he published this book and I immediately bought it. It does not disappoint! Assembling responses from a mix of amazing editors this books gives insights into things that most books miss -- how to watch dailies, approaching a blank project/timeline, organizing bins in a way that will help your cut, micro structure, macro structure, pacing and so so much more! The other thing I love about this book is that the responses/approaches from the interviewed editors are not always the same and often contradict each other. Some methods work for some but not others. This allows the reader to see many approaches and use the wisdom from each approach to create their own hybrid style. It's also great for new assistants, allowing them to become familiar with the many approaches top editors make take to a new show. Great read for creative and practical approaches to your next edit!

Not finished with it yet, but so far really good. Especially helpful to someone like me who's just getting started as an editor.I like how it's sorted by topic. You can see how different editors answer the same questions. Also sometimes they talk about situations specific to the movie they are being interviewed about and those answers are even more detailed. There's also a website for more information and examples.I could see this being used for editing classes, actually

A must-have for anyone who aspires to working as an editor in features or TV. Author Steve Hullfish interviews some of the top names in post production and provides a great deal of insights into the editors' struggles, their philosophical approaches, and the day-to-day nitty-gritty of what goes into putting together the pieces of large projects. Indispensable to students wanting an insight into how to get your foot in the door, and what it takes to survive the pressures of Hollywood. I've been in post-production more than 30 years, and even I learned a lot from Steve's book. Highly recommended.

I've read a dozen books on Film and Video Editing. There are a plethora of great reads, but to me, none of them have captured multiple Editors voices and gone into the nitty gritty like "Art of the Cut" has; it's AMAZING!Walter Murch's "In the Blink of an Eye" has always been a seminal book on the subject (And that book is still required reading for editors), but in my opinion, Steve Hullfish has made something even more informative and useful to Editors. Hearing how Emmy and Academy Award winning Editors think about every part of their process is absolutely priceless.I can't recommend this book enough, and I will certainly be reading it again and again throughout my career.

Lots of great information in this book, from industry leading editors. You can read all the same info on his website, in full interview form. The advantage of the book is that the author combines highlights into chapters for quicker reads. The downside is that (1) you don't have to pay to read the website interviews, and (2) the book is only as current as the print date. Still, it well worth reading.
