James D. Shipman has written a beautiful historical novel. It takes you along the journey of Joseph Forsyth from Ireland to the New World and through to the Civil War. Along the way, you get to truly experience Joseph's struggles and triumphs, with his family, his loves and the war. You will not want to put this book down. It is a must read! In fact, I can't wait to read it again! This is James' best work yet.

NOTE: Based on a true story.GOING HOME takes you on the journey of Joseph Forsyth from his home in Ireland to the New World and through the Civil War. You actually get to experience Joseph's struggles and triumphs with his family, his loves and the war.The story begins with Joseph Forsyth, a Union soldier, fighting in the trenches during the Battle of Petersburg, Virginia. Joseph is shot in the chest by Confederate soldiers and is taken to the Union Hospital Camp. Rebecca Walker, a young nurse who is still grieving the death of her only child from illness and of her husband in another battle a few months before, is the first to assess the wounds of Joseph. As she tries to find where he has been wounded, she comes across a letter pinned to the inside of his blood-soaked jacket. It is from Joseph’s wife and reminds Rebecca of her patient’s humanity. She decides then and there to fight for Joseph’s life. She pleads with the Army surgeon, Dr. Thomas Johnston, to rethink Joseph’s wound, which is in the left collar below the bone. Johnston complies and then operates on Joseph. Rebecca’s nursing skill and determination may save Joseph after all.We then go back to when Joseph, a lad of eleven from County Derry in Ireland, boards a ship for America with his father Robert, a drunk who has quite violent temper and his beloved, uncomplaining mother Lydia. They hope to find and buy land to farm in America. Alas, Robert is the undoing of his family. He gambles when he is drinking. During the voyage, Robert drinks and joins a card game. He bets with money he doesn’t have. To pay his debt, he sells his son Joseph into an apprenticeship with Michael O’Dwyer, a printer who lives in Quebec City, Canada. When the ship reaches New York Harbor, Joseph remains on board as his parents leave the ship. Joseph then finds himself alone in The New World with no control over his destiny. His helplessness then grows into an iron resolve to become master of his own fate.I liked the way the story went back and forth between Joseph as a wounded Yankee soldier in the 1860s and his earlier life starting in the 1840s and the lives of the other characters that were left behind. The best part about the story is that it is based on a true story. You will not want to put this book down. It is a must read! I highly recommend this novel!!!

Attorney Jim Shipman has done it again, written a compelling historical novel which has been meticulously researched and yet comes off as a readable story much like his 2012 release of Constantinople. This new story is about his family. It is a tale of immigrants, a tale of promise and failure, of hope of loss. It is a story about the Americans. Mostly though, it is a story about values.Jim’s Great, Great Grandfather is brought over from Ireland and more or less is an indentured servant in French speaking Quebec, manages to escape basically, although ultimately with the consent of his “employer” then find his family in New York; find love there too. Later Joseph Forsyth finds himself in a place where he needed $300 to pay a debt he really didn’t owe, by current standards, and rather than borrow from friends or his wealthy but agenda driven father in law, he accepts a bounty to join the New York Volunteers and head for the front lines of the Civil War in 1864.This book should be read with a good dose of Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion behind you and a recording of Ashokan Farwell playing in the background. In this age where the likely choice in conflict is the cheap shot, the easy way out, lives are lead morally relaxed or the path of least resistance, and pleasure and leisure are the objectives, we are ushered into a time where there were indeed men who were men, in the most respectable reference to the term. Joseph Forsyth stands tall, and stands on his own two feet. One has the impression Jim is relating lesser character types he may have encountered in his practice, none of his clients to be sure, but we will all recognize the drunk, the pampered wife, and the bully. Generally however the people of Popes Mill or Macomb, New York do the right thing.Perhaps things were simpler then. Perhaps in this time Jim takes us to where people did the right thing is no longer achievable. I pray it is not so. Going Home is a good dose of what built the country; values that survive economic ruin and distress, of self reliance and good faith. It is also a good dose of how men can fail, usually by hubris or materialism or those things that erode the foundation of honorable manhood.

It wasn’t until I finished this book that I realized that it was written by the author about his family ancestors. Poor Joseph Forsyth has been used and abused from the beginning. First he and his family leave Ireland to find peace and prosperity. On the voyage to America, Joseph’s drunkard father loses all his money in a card game and sells Joseph into bondage. Joseph is taken to Quebec and after his indenture is determined to find his father and mother. He actually does find his father in northern New York State and stays to help his wayward father, new wife and half-sister keep their farm. He is hard-working, determined and loyal – to his detriment. His father has not stopped his drinking nor his gambling and in order to pay off a debt, Joseph enlists in the Northern Army during the Civil War. He is wounded in battle and would have died except for the care and concern of a nurse in the Union hospital.Eventually recovering, he returns home to marry a hometown girl and tries to make something of himself. His wife Lucy’s father is a manipulating man who always gets what he wants and only if it profits him. Joseph endures years of being under another’s thumb until he’s had enough. What ensues next is uplifting, yet sad.The author did a fine job of writing about his ancestors. The book was hard to read in spots and it seemed as though Joseph took a long time to stand up to what he wanted.
