Perhaps the best so far in this consistently fascinating series.” ―Kirkus, Starred Review, on Scholar“Modesitt has drawn a superb portrait of an honest and powerful man handed a crisis that even he may not be able to handle. . . . Extremely satisfying.” ―Booklist on Imager's Intrigue

Quaeryt is now a subcommander in Lord Bhayar's army against Rex Kharst. As far as Imager history goes, this is the unification war for what becomes Solidar as well as explains the bigger Why there is an Imagisle school/residence for imagers in Rhen's time. There is plenty of action in this book, and much like the first one (Scholar), the battles each build on the last, so that the small group of imaging undercaptains get a chance to develop their skills under Quaeryt's guidance and leadership. It's still focused a great deal on what Quaeryt can do personally with his imaging, but he is starting to note how imaging skills differ in each person. The conversations about shields definitely could have used more depth. The interweaving of "The Chosen One" (ok, the "Lost One") mythology with Quaeryt's growing powers and reputation got pretty old at times. I was thankful that Modesitt kept Quaeryt's character in character throughout those exchanges, though, because by the time they get to the bigger northern cities, the mythology angle was getting tedious for both Quaeryt and me-as-reader.I liked the action and the interpersonal relationships that went along with the campaign, but I really didn't like how many names I had to keep in my head at one time. I got tangled up in which guy got killed at one point, so when Major So-and-So showed up later, I had to go back and check who had actually been killed. Argh.I recommend this book to people who have been following the Imager series so far. You can start with either Imager or Scholar, but for your enjoyment and continuity's sake, don't start here.

The sixth book of L. E. Modesitt Jr.'s Imagers series is another great addition to the story of one man's journey to change an entire society's attitude towards imagers. These men and women are this world's magic wielders, but have no place to train or know any ethical limits to it's use. In Imager's Battalion, Quaeryt is now a commanding officer in an invading force while trying to train a group of inexperienced imagers. Not only does he need to figure out how to destroy cannon and city defensive walls with imaging, while not using too much of his strength, but he also has to contend with intrigue within the officer corps. This series is fairly technical, with a good smattering of ethical discussions added in, but is very enjoyable if you like L. E. Modesitt Jr.'s work.

If you liked the last 20 chapters of Princeps, then you would love this book. If you didn't then you might want to wait for Antiagon Fire, the next in this series which is due in May of this year. This book does not stand alone. It is all middle. It does not have a proper beginning which is why you need to read Scholar and Princeps first. Likewise, there is no conclusion in a literary sense. There will be at least one more book in this series so there is hope that Modesitt will bring everything together.Even so, I enjoyed this book and rated it 4 stars. The action is well written and I am fascinated by Modesitt's description of life on a long military campaign and his description of the religion of this fantasy universe. The main character, Quaeryt, deals with several thought provoking issues--justification of war, vanity, sacrificing the few for the many, agnosticism, and the slippery slope of abuse of power. We know, in the same way that we know that young Anikin Skywalker will turn to the dark side, that the nation will be united and that Quaeryt will be successful in achieving his ultimate goal. The suspense is maintained by not knowing how or at what cost.

I found this series a month or so before this new book was published, and have already read the five prior books twice and purchased them as Kindle versions after I had rented them from the library. I'll reread the series over again, but this is the first book that takes a slight departure from the other books in the prequel. It is almost exclusively about wartime battles (duh!). I missed the prominence of his wife, Valeora, in the book. It was somewhat compensated by the filling in about the "Lost One" mystery and the Pharsis which I was happy to see. Despite the minor departure from the political intrigue, I actually really liked the book, but not as much as the prior five books. So it gets an B+ which still is a good read. I will still preorder the next books in the series because the imager concept, socio/political world, the Pharsis people and their strong matriarchs, and his thinking yet bold protagonists are all very engaging and a pleasure to read.

I love anything by Modesitt because he posits the big ethical questions that confront us all in the unfolding of his characters and story. What is right? What is the best one can do in a compromised situation? Who determines what is "right"? What are the consequences of greed and power-mongering? What are the consequences of idealistic visions? How can the fall-out of the "best" option available be terrible? And what is "terrible" as opposed to what else might happen? The frailties of humankind are laid open and the difficulties of "best judgment" in crisis situations explored. The Imager series is excellent as is the Recluce series. I enjoy Modesitt's pure Sci-fi also, stand-alones like Adiamente, Octagonal Raven, and Gravity Dreams. Other excellent series focused on ecological concerns are the Forever Hero series and the Ecolitan series.

I think these should be called "imaging/fighting procedurals." Like police procedurals, half of the fun is following the consistent and logical (assuming certain things) methods of imaging and fighting, as well as imaging in fights.Modesitt has also managed one of the most difficult things in writing: making the relationship between a happily married couple interesting. Part of his secret is keeping them apart most of the time. The second is making them both highly analytical. He also shows sex in marriage very well, which is really unusual. It is a pleasurably, bonding, teasing part of the relationship, but not all that important on an hour by hour basis.
