The Little Hummingbird

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3–Based on a South American indigenous story, this book tells of a forest fire that causes the animals to flee for their lives. All except Little Hummingbird, that is, who begins ferrying single drops of water from a nearby stream to the forest. As she works steadfastly to douse the flames, one by one the animals cry out their reasons for running away. Finally Big Bear asks, “Little Hummingbird, what are you doing?” and she replies, “I am doing everything I can.” This fablelike tale shows readers how one person can make a difference in everyday life. It will resonate with children and provide a jumping-off point for discussions about how change happens. The illustrations are monochromatic and beautifully representative of Native Haida art. The motif continues onto the endpapers in a stunning black and gray pattern that is both dramatic and satisfying. The author includes back matter on the place of hummingbirds in legend and in an afterword, Nobel Prize-winner Wangari Maathai offers insight into the importance of the individual.Joan Kindig, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA© Copyright 2010. The Little Hummingbird is the embodiment of this relatively new style of Haida comics, which combines elements of traditional North Pacific arts and narrative, in this case that of the Haida, and the design of Japanese manga. —Globe & Mail (2010-05-02)STARRED: Evocative artwork complements this optimistic story that encourages everyone to take responsibility for their home and the planet. —Best Books for Kids & Teens 2011 (2011-07-01)

I found this little book and its message quite moving. I purchased it for my first granddaughter and have been reading it to her, then with her and now that she's reading, listening to her read it to me.❤️I am now purchasing my third book for my third granddaughter.I think I'll buy one for myself.

Such a great book about how we ALL need to contribute.

Great story!

This story is one of the best I have read. I have integrated it into my class curriculum year after year. I'll find any great reason to read this to my kiddos.

This book is fantastic. That is all.

The Little Hummingbird (2010) is the story of a hummingbird who, while the many other animals run in fear from a raging fire, works to save the forest one drop of water at a time. A traditional Quechua story of determination and doing “the best one can” is told by Yahgulanaas through spare text and striking images in black, white, and red: the illustrations are inspired by the drawings of the Haida people of the pacific northwest. The book includes well-made source notes and facts about the hummingbird and its importance and symbolism in the tales of peoples around the world. The length of the tale, the fast paced text, and boldness of the illustrations impart the graveness of the situation in which the hummingbird heroically reminds us that even the smallest of us, doing the smallest of deeds, can make an impact or create change.

This is a very nice, but little, book that tells a short parable about the flight of a humingbird that saves a forest. It is well written and illustrated by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. Though the main story is a short four pages, it delivers it message effectively and succinctly. The added value with this book is the Afterward by Nobel Peace Price winner Wangari Maathai, the Kenyan woman known for her work planting trees in Africa (A previous version of this book also included an afterword by the Dalai Lama, but this edition does not).Again, this is a short book, but it is a nice little package of important, though-provoking words. It would make a great gift for the environmentally enlightened as well as the environmentally challenged.A Guide to my Book Rating System:1 star = The wood pulp would have been better utilized as toilet paper.2 stars = Don't bother, clean your bathroom instead.3 stars = Wasn't a waste of time, but it was time wasted.4 stars = Good book, but not life altering.5 stars = This book changed my world in at least some small way.

i believe that i get more from this story than my daughter. it is a great story, a classic that every child, adolescent and adult should read.
