I finally got around to actually reading this limited series after over 30 years. I knew the bare basics because you can't help tripping all over it while reading collections from this period like the Thing Classic softcovers, the Simonson Thor Omnibus, the X-Men masterworks, etc. Here are some of my impressions. Spoiler alert!The Beyonder being is the plot driver and is yet another omnipotent being of which the Marvel universe has many. The difference this time is that the Beyonder is pictured as sort of a "Galactus' Galactus", i.e. a being as far above Galactus as Galactus is above us. He is a being, like God, whom desire is a completely alien concept; his merest whim is instantly reality. Writer Jim Shooter mostly succeeds in dealing with such a mind boggling concept although inconsistencies abound. For example, when Dr. Doom gains the Beyonder's powers *his* whims do not become instant reality; his mother is still a prisoner in Mephisto's domain and he is shown planning to do something about that. But all in all, the basic premise was dealt with well enough and did not derail the story.There were a lot of nice character moments in this series. Dr. Doom steals the show in this regard but almost every character (and there were dozens) gets a chance to shine.There were a lot of plot elements introduced in this series that played out later in other titles. Examples are Spider-Man's alien costume, Colossus' estrangement from Kitty Pryde, and the Thing remaining behind on the battleworld.The art was underwhelming for such an important series, reportedly Marvel's counterpunch to DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths series going on at the same time. One gets the impression that penciler Mike Zeck was very rushed. I deducted a star for this alone.As a collection this is a minimal effort. One gets just the 12 issues and nothing else. But it has a price point to match so if you have (or have read) the various lead ins to this series this is a cheap way to get the main event.Despite shortcomings, the book is recommended. It was an enjoyable read. The series has been criticized as a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing but that is too harsh a judgement. One unfortunate fallout from the commercial success of this series and the aforementioned Crisis was the company wide annual mega crossover that plagues us to this day.

Secret Wars is a kind of new mythology fit for our times. When in the past heroes and villains of antiquity travel the sea and combat monsters these heroes travel the blackness of interestelar distances and don't worship the gods but combat them grasping the infinite.The book is not a childish one, is totally epic and dense, a real tour de force. Each page asks to be read with the intensity of a whole comic as exhibit the impact the special black costume, found by a certain and dear character, is going to be in the future. Although there are two groups of "villains" and "heroes" the division is not easy as some are attracted to the other side, and even inside the heroes the status of the mutants as something apart adds complexity to the story.There are other stories that deal with multiversal powers like the several Crisis in DC and the last Secret Wars of Marvel, but they in my opinion don't reach, and even fail in transmit, the grandeur of this comic, or even worse try to be so epic but fall in the ridicule... aged as this comic is in its efficient drawing the sheer power here is really felt.

Way before the Marvel Super Heroes battles Thanos in the 1991 epic superhero crossover "The Infinity Gauntlet", they were in a battle on a planet called Battleworld in this 1984 blockbuster that was adapted into the three-part episode of the 1994 Spider-Man animated series. The story starts with a prologue where Spider-Man, the X-Men (Professor X, Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler, Rogue & Colossus), the Fantastic Four (Mister Fantastic, the Human Torch, & the Thing), the Hulk, Iron Man (Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes) & the Avengers (Captain America, Thor, She-Hulk, Hawkeye, Captain Marvel & the Wasp) disappears in a mysterious alien structure in Central Park. Then it was reveals they were brought to Battleworld by the Beyonder to battles their enemies for his amusement. Of course, it features the debut of the new Spider-Woman (Julia Carpenter) who joins the Marvel Super Heroes & Captain America was appointed leader much of Wolverine's dismay. Colossus fell in love with an alien while the Wasp have a tutenlous relationship with Magneto which ended badly. The Hulk was showing signs of Banner losing control of the Hulk which led to the conclusion of "The Incredible Hulk: Regression" story arc. Oh yeah and Spider-Man dons the black alien costume which change his entire life in "The Alien Costume Saga" story arc. The story ends when the Thing wants to stay on Battleworld and She-Hulk took his place as a member of the Fantastic Four while the rest of the Marvel Super Heroes returns to Earth. Of course, Hawkeye was worrying that the Hulk might be showing signs of him turning savage."Secret Wars" was Marvel's first blockbuster that prepare the Marvel Super Heroes for the 1991 epic blockbuster "The Infinity Gauntlet". Marvel Studios should think about doing a crossover movie based on the "Secret Wars" story arc.

A great cookbook from London with gorgeous photos. Recipe measurements are in metric, so for us U.S. citizens it makes for a test in conversions.

I read about this book in one of my magazines & bought three. Two for family & one for myself. Looking forward to using it. Recipe photos are bright & colorful.

Overall this is a very attractive book however there were two basic problems with making their pizza recipe at home. First is on page 14 where the Yeast Version of the pizza dough is outlined. To make 640g dough it says to use 250ml lukewarm water, 0.2g dry yeast, 1 desertspoon olive oil, 380g flour, 10g salt. That seems like a lot of salt (10g) and a tiny amount of dry yeast (0.2g). The amount of yeast is so small that it can't possibly be right, can it? I'm happy to stand corrected if 0.2g is correct but then I'd like to know how you can measure 0.2g of dry yeast easily in the home kitchen. As a result, I ditched the book and went back to using my old pizza dough recipe. The other thing is that the authors suggest leaving the dough in an ambient temperature of 20-25 (degrees)C for 16-18 hours. This would be ok to do in a pizza restaurant but in the home situation in a cooler climate, how could this be achieved without heating the house to the required temperature for that period of time? In short, those two problems with the basic pizza dough recipe really detracted from what is a wonderfully produced book.

I bought this book as well as Forces Make Things Move for use in an engineering class I did for kindergartners/first graders and they were both fabulous. The author does a great job of distilling complicated ideas into simple easy to understand concepts, which is NOT an easy feat. The kids had no trouble understanding the ideas as presented and even the adults present learned some new things. The illustrations are engaging and well-done. I would happily buy anything else from this author and highly recommend these both!

Easy to follow and explains every concept as you go. There is some great challenging vocabulary but it's so easy for 1st grade children to follow that the few challenge words just make for a great discussion.

A GREAT teacher at a typically under-supported school needed reading materials for the students; it was VERY much appreciated...

Great book

I teach 4th grade science and I used this book for my unit on Energy. Its a cute book that the kids liked it. It does a pretty good job describing what energy is and the ways we use it. It's great to read when you are starting the unit.

My kids 4 and 8 love this book. I even learned a lot also.

Perfect for third grade curriculum. Easy to understand language for children of this age. Cute illustrations that help tell the story.

I find the Let's Read and Find Out books to be of varying quality. Some of them are great, some of them are more mediocre. This one falls somewhere between those poles, for me. Overall, it's fine, but there are a couple of moments when energy (especially types of potential energy) are explained in ways that I think are slightly confusing to little kids. There's a section in this book where potential energy is discussed using a boulder on top of a hill that I struggled to answer my child's questions about, for instance.

The book talks about the different things kids will encounter in kindergarten, like sitting criss cross applesauce, recess, having many different best friends over the course of the day, finding a special treat in their lunchbox, etc. Each "topic" is its own freestanding little "poem". While the book is very cute and humorous, if your kid already goes to preschool, there's not really anything new talked about here. If you're looking for something that addresses a kid's fear or anxiety about going into kindergarten (new situations like riding the bus, getting lost, eating in the cafeteria, not knowing any of the other kids, etc), I suggest checking out Kindergarten Rocks by Katie Davis.

Purchased this book last year to see if it may help in our kids' transition from preschool to kindergarten. New school, new teachers and new friends was a concern because my twin girls aren't the most social and can have some difficulties with changes.Turns out my girls transitioned better than expected and this book was just a nice book/story for them. I don't think it made much of a difference for transition, but it helped to reinforce that kids move on, and kindergarten is a normal next step.

This book is a popular read aloud in my kindergarten class. I decided to purchase copies for each of my incoming students. I brought the stack of books in to school and as I began writing in the books I noticed a few copies were pretty gross (she photos). There were mushy brown parts, bug parts, and what I am hoping is not bug eggs. I threw multiple copies away and didn’t have enough copies for my class. Very sad. Books did not arrive in plastic as usual but were loose in the box.

Such a cute book that actually explains pretty well what kindergarten is like. My grandson started kindergarten this year and most everything in this bookwas the same. He went to school without the fear of the unknown and we still read the book every night and he compares what they do.

The book itself is very good, illustrated well. Sad that the quality is not better.It is very flimsy, will not hold up very well to children. The quality is poor should be priced around $2.

Great for my granddaughter who was a little apprehensive about leaving home all day. It helped her see what would really happen. She did wonderful her first day when she saw all her friends and like kindergarten. She read it several times with her parents the week before she started kindergarten so it was perfect.

Really cute Kindergarten book written as a series of poems that highlight the first YEAR of school. Worth noting that this is less about the first day of school and it follows the boy as he progresses through his whole Kindergarten year. We love poem books so this was great. One thing to note is that in the book the children all take naps in Kindergarten. In my son's school at least, they do not nap anymore at Kindergarten and this was a transition we were preparing him for. Worth noting before so you can address or skip that part if it is a sore subject.

Parents with little ones going to school for the first time and/or has glasses, Pre-K (like my son) or kindergarten.i highly recommend this book. My son loves it, first thing he said Mommy he has glasses like me. And he said that's me going to school. It's so encouraging this book I love it 😍🤓😊🤗

Absolutely loved this book. The story wasn't what I expected, but I love what it adds to the story of Carol Danvers.

Carol Danvers has such a convoluted history that it was long overdue to redo her origin. Since a new movie is coming out, now seems to be the perfect opportunity to do that. Being a huge Carol Danvers fan myself, naturally, I was very excited. However, after having read Margaret Stohl’s “Life of Captain Marvel” I must say that I am vastly disappointed.First of all, I am fine with the big twist in the second half of the book that sort of redefines who she is (no spoilers here) - even though it makes absolutely no sense when you look back at previous stories. (How can you explain her Binary powers? one may wonder…) Anyway, I am fine with that. It is not the first time in the history of comics that a muddled continuity gets sacrificed for the sake of a fresh perspective on a well known character. (Waid’s “Superman Birthright” is only one example of how to do things right.)The problem with “Life of Captain Marvel” is that the whole arc could have easily fit on one page at the beginning of a new run while explaining her revised backstory. If you want to give her a new origin, I appreciate it! But don’t pretend that you have a compelling story to tell when in fact you haven’t. Everything in this book seems forced. It tries so hard to stretch out a “new origin” in order to sell an additional trade for people who watch the movie. I get it. Marvel wants to sell some comics to new readers. But the effect might be that you anger (or even lose) long time comic book fans. Margaret Stohl’s version of Carol Danvers is just not the Carol Danvers I know and fell in love with. I admit that I am not completely unbiased here, since – after I followed Captain Marvel’s solo title for a quite some time – it was only a few issues after Stohl took over when I jumped off. (I even endured the terrible “Civil War II” phase where you could see how desperately Marvel tried to make Carol the “next big thing” by totally wrecking her personality). Nevertheless, I wanted to give this mini-series a new try.It always seemed to me that there was something off about Stohl’s writing and this book sadly confirms it. As I see it, Stohl is just not the visual storyteller the medium requires (maybe the fact that she is mainly known as a novelist has something to do with it, but I don’t necessarily want to go down that route.) The pacing of the book is terrible, stuffed with way too many dialogue and/or inner monologue scenes. Instead of using the various possibilities of the medium to convey emotion, the characters just tell you what you are supposed to feel. Carol’s depression and anger management issues, which – as we are told – derive from a problematic family background, are established in such an obvious and unsubtle way that I cringed a couple of times. The beginning of the book reads like an exhausting therapy session, which gets even worse when Carol discovers a small alien device among her father’s letters that accidentally triggers a cosmic threat. I have a question here: How can Captain Marvel, commander of Alpha Flight, an intelligent and experienced Sci-Fi heroine who dealt with numerous alien menaces before – how can she of all people carelessly hammer on Kree technology?! This makes absolutely no sense. Moreover, it disregards everything you knew about the character.So if you are new to Carol Danvers, don’t bother to read “Life of Captain Marvel” and get Kelly Sue DeConnick’s excellent take on the character instead. The two stars are solely for the incredible art by Carlos Pacheco and Marguerite Sauvage as well as the gorgeous covers by Julian Totino Tedesco.

I realize they're trying to make this fit the movie, but some of it does not fit the Kree empire.First of all, not all Kree are virtually invulnerable, can fly, are enormously strong and can travel in outer space with no life support, although a few enhanced Kree can do some of those things. But this story says that her powers all come from her Kree genetics, not from the Psyche-Magnetron like other powerful Kree.This also does not really address her longtime emotional alienation from her family.Then there's her new name Car-Ell. It was bad enough that her predecessor was named Mar-Vell, but now her name is awful close to Kal-el, aka Superman, another alien. Wow, those aliens all have the same names - imagine that!I did enjoy the personal tone of the story (and the art), but it's just not the Carol Danvers we came to love. And its not an improvement.I expect and hope this will be ignored later.

Carol Danvers (a.k.a. Captain Marvel) has some anger issues and heads back home to small-town Maine to deal with it. She had an abusive father who is long since dead. Her mom and her brother still live in Harpswell Sound. Bringing up family ghosts only causes more problems for Carol, her mom, and her brother. Physical, psychological, and extra-terrestrial problems may be more than Carol is ready to deal with when it comes to her family.The main story leads naturally into some backstory for Danvers. The writer adds a bit to her origin that is logical but also (for me) disappointing. Carol's angry/angsty characterization takes a lot of the fun out of her, almost as if she's someone very different from the Carol Danvers of all the other stories. Going in that direct is one way to tell a new story but I was not appreciative.Not recommended.

This was a charming, thoughtful, moving, and inspiring take on the origin and struggles of Carol Danver’s past. With her, we discover unknown skeletons and unknown promises set in beautiful artwork that fit the quick witted yet girlish warrior woman who is Captain Marvell.

Great heart warming story that ties up a bunch of loose ends particularly if you are old enough like me that read the first graphic novel in marvel history “Death of Captain Marvel”. I love how this title juxtapositions itself with the original from the 80s

Why have a woman hero act like an angry teenage boy?

I took a chance buying this book. Not only because I thought that this character was called "Ms. Marvel," but "Ms. Marvel" is now a 12-year old with massive ham-hands? So I was confused to start. The only thing I remembered about "Captain Marvel" from the 90's was that Rogue stole her powers and put her in a coma? She was drawn magnificently then: a beautiful and stunning example of the idealized female superhero. What they're doing now with the art however... is not good. Not to mention, the character doesn't act heroically at all. She rounds up and incarcerates American citizens without trial and hands out sloppy fascistic street justice to anyone who gets in her way - Maybe she's a herald of Galactus or one of Apocalypse's Horseman? This book is pretty messed up. I can't figure out why they keep rebooting it. No one even knows whom this character is!
