I think Charlie Nardozzi could have done a lot better. (Sorry, Charlie.) On one page he says that a plant has some herbal use but he can't remember what it is. Well, look it up before publishing! On another page, there is a reference to a page in the book that was left with XXX's rather than the page number -- sloppy editing. And those two irritants were encountered in a cursory flip-through after purchasing -- who knows what other bummers are lurking there. Charlie Nardozzi becomes a favorite for every VT gardener who listens to VPR, so of course I would buy the book, and indeed I've already found some valuable tips there (as well as the irritants). But really, send the book through another round of editing -- weed it out! -- and it could be something better than "just OK."

My husband bought this for me as a gift and I was thrilled. I'm very intimidated by gardening and have had little to no success. This book has just the right amount of information and photos. Not overwhelming, but still extremely useful. I learned I had so many perennials right in my yard that I could actual take advantage of. I didn't spend a dollar on flowers. I divided what I already had with confidence from this book! I got a lot of positive feedback about my garden this year, but most importantly, I feel empowered and excited about gardening.... Something I wasn't expecting

First garden in Plymouth, MA. Would have been helpless without this book. Wish I had a book like this in other places

very good book

Very informative. Tells you what to plant and where and when. Includes info. on plants that do well when planted together.

I liked it. Good basic over-view of what grows in the NE.. But, beware: northern NE is much different that southern NE.

This book is about basics - growing a lawn; the right plants and flowers in sun and shade; shrubs. It is the perfect reference book.

Very useful

An Ocean of Light: Contemplation, Transformation, and Liberation, by Martin Laird

Review

"Once again, Martin Laird has given us a book on the contemplative journey that is without verbiage, mystification, or sentimentality, both intensely challenging and enriching, and anchored in realism. His writing on this subject is simply in a different league of seriousness from most other books on 'spiritual' practice." -- Rowan Williams, Master, Magdalene College, University of Cambridge"In this his third volume on contemplative prayer, Martin Laird once again combines acute scholarly citations from the contemplative tradition with memorable narratives from his own direction. But this time he plumbs new depths of insight: the section on prayer and depression, in particular, is unique in its wisdom and insight. This is a new modern classic, and will stand the test of time. To be read and savoured again and again." -- Sarah Coakley, Norris-Hulse Professor of Divinity, University of Cambridge"A beautifully written, thoughtful and honest account of what it means to face oneself and our shared world in the silent depths of prayer. And so encouraging! A powerful reminder that the simple, daily, moment-to-moment practice of paying attention can heal and transform, can help bring us closer to God and to one another. The one thing necessary." -- Douglas E. Christie, author of The Blue Sapphire of the Mind"Martin Laird is a gracious host; he presents the rich fare of the Christian contemplative tradition in an authentic twenty-first-century vernacular, and in so doing invites the reader-who could resist such an invitation?-to enter into the banquet of silent and loving communion with the living God." -- Carol Zaleski, Professor of World Religions, Smith College

Martin Laird is my favorite writer on the art, practice, and literary soul of Christian contemplation. I pre-ordered this book months ago and am now working my way through. His books are to be read slowly, and I appreciate their engagement with not only the saints of old and new (of whose writing and lives he has an academic's knowledge), but with beautiful poetry and literature. His work is dense and wise. I still think back to stories from his first book on Contemplative practice, INTO THE SILENT LAND, as my understanding of his work deepens with my own daily centering prayer practice. I love this newest book -- it is as good as I had hoped it would be.

This is the type of book that must be read twice if not multiple times to fully grasp the depth and width of this wonderful topic. Let me share eight key points I found very enlightening.Intention“The more we give our lives over to the practice of contemplation, the more our thinking mind is trellised by silence, the more easily thinking mind remains still and focused on what it is good at, such as thinking, inventing, writing, creating new ways to hold and heal.”“Practice gradually trains the attention and grounds us more solidly in our bodies, increasing our ability to be where our bodies are at any given moment.”“The present moment is our home.”Silence teaches us how to live. Silence is a place we come from. Silence teaches us to be present. When we are present we do our best work: thinking, inventing, writing, creating new ways to hold and heal. Silence seems to show us the way forward!Awareness“Cultivating the skill of becoming aware of our thoughts allows for the possibility of choosing what we give our attention to.”“By learning to choose what we give our attention to we open ourselves up to the possibilities of experiencing a situation with less anxiety and with more compassion.”“We may think we are feeling our feelings but what we actually feel is the story we tell ourselves about our thoughts and feelings.”We are not our thoughts. Yet, so many of us believe we are our thoughts and what they seem to tell us. When we cultivate the ability to observe our thoughts, we can choose which ones to believe and which ones to let go of.There are thoughts that merit our attention and there are ones that will hinder our growth, progress and movement forward. It becomes particularly important during life’s most stressful moments to choose what we give our attention to. We can became an important source of strength and calmness for those around us.Radiant Ground of Light“The practice of contemplation gradually declutters our minds, gradually revealing the brightly polished floor—the radiant core of all—that we did not realize was already there.”“The mind cleared of clutter allows the grounding radiance of unitive mind to manifest the fullness that is its essence, both in time and in eternity.”“The practice of contemplation proceeds by the gradual removal of layers of clutter so that the radiant ground of light now shines less lumbered and encumbered.”“Similarly the vast and radiant core of all being is already unspeakably vast and radiant despite the abundance of noise and clutter in our heads.”During silent prayer we enter the vast and endless depths of God. Each time we return to the silence, we clear away more and more of the clutter. We begin to discover a new world that we did not know was there. Each time we enter the silence we explore more and more of the vastness and spaciousness of silence. It becomes a life long journey.Dig Your Well“Changing our practice often does not allow our practice to put down roots deeply into the soil of the present moment.”“As we have said, a contemplative practice is something like a plant. If we are frequently digging up and replanting the plant elsewhere, it will not put down roots.”My mainstay is centering prayer. I practice twice per day, twenty minutes each time. I have done so since June of 2014. I have found my well. Now I will dig deep into my centering well. And see where it takes me.Reactive Mind….Receptive Mind….Luminous Mind“Reactive mind simply does not register this depth-dimension, which has always been present.”“Receptive mind is characterized by a growing sense of inner spaciousness.”“It is important to emphasize that this luminous vastness, which begins to expand as our practice transitions from reactive mind to receptive mind, is not an extra quantity of vastness that has been added into the mix. Ever flowing, luminous vastness has always been shining like the sun.”“In luminous mind our practice is free of any strategy to acquire, possess, and control.”I love how Laird eloquently describes the stages we seem to go through in our silent prayer: reactive mind, receptive mind, luminous mind. Though it is more likely that we move back and forth between these stages. Silent prayer is never a linear process. Laird nicely describes the experiences one might go through in each “mind”.The Mature Contemplative“The maturing contemplative is too poor to be concerned with spiritual progress.”“The fruit of practice is compassion, born of the fragrant wound of solidarity with all that is. It has nothing to do with outcomes assessments. We cannot behold if we are trying to assess.”“As we release into our practice, we also release our control over ourselves as contemplative projects to be realized. What, when, or if anything happens is entirely up to God.”We are all beginners. Each time I sit I like to think of myself as a beginner. Contemplative prayer is the world in which anything can happen. I simply rest in the rest of God. I open to the presence and actions of God within. I let God pray in me.Depression“Depression can help us stay anchored in the present moment; for it limits us to coping with getting through the day one step at a time, one half-hour at a time—whatever it takes. This is actually the only dosage life comes in: one step at a time (one day at a time can sometimes seem over-ambitious).”“Insofar as we are aware of depression, there is something within us that is free of depression; otherwise we could not be aware of it.”I do not suffer from depression. From time to time like anyone else I experience times of sadness, worry or a sense of hopelessness. When I do, I try to remember that there is something within me that is free of these feelings. I can observe these thoughts and feelings. They are not who I am. They cannot hold me back from becoming the person God intends me to be: my true self. For those that suffer from long term depression, part three of this book is devoted to silence and depression. I highly recommend it. Laird magnificently navigates depression and the place in can take in silence.Self Knowledge“Fourth, self-knowledge becomes less a matter of knowing about ourselves than a falling away of self, a self unselfed of self, and therefore one with all in the intimate love of God, who has sought and found us from all eternity.”It is in the silence that we let go of our self to discover a new self: one with all in the intimate love of God. This is who we are. We are a child of God who unconditionally loves us, yet patiently waits for us.I encourage you to check out An Ocean of Light. Read it once. Go back and read it a second time. I did. Come back to it when needed. I know I will!Rich LewisSilenceTeaches.com

An Ocean of Light is the very best book I have ever read on the subject of contemplative prayer. Fr. Martin’s explanation of reactive mind is explained perfectly. Receptive mind and luminous mind are described in a way that was new for me. I appreciate Fr. Martin’s work on this book as well as those people who supported him in his writing. I will be returning to this book again and again.

The third of the trilogy--and it certainly didn't disappoint. Beautifully written and extraordinarily helpful!

I am amazed at the clarity that Martin Laird brings to this topic that some call the Divine Mystery. He has a knack for assembling the right quotes and metaphors and turn of phrase that provides a firehose of beautiful soul nutrition...clarifying that which seems impossible to talk about. I am just drinking this up, the soul-thirsty pilgrim that I am. ...Wanting to share it with all.I am inspired by many of the writers he quotes and there are many that are new to me here. But his approach is like bringing all of them into a room at the best dinner party ever.I would think this book is a must for anyone on the contemplative journey.

The Story of Tea: A Cultural History and Drinking Guide, by Mary Lou Heiss

From Publishers Weekly

Purveyors of fine tea, the Heisses' documentary dexterously weaves through the wars, economic upheavals and embargoes surrounding what was once considered the elixir of immortality. Though tea usage may predate written history, evidence suggests that Camellia sinensis's invigorating leaves were first cultivated centuries ago in the tea gardens of indigenous minorities in Northwestern China and along the Indian, Myanmar and Tibetan borders. Chinese monks recognized the energizing effects and medicinal value of this evergreen plant and, by touting its benefits, ignited a thirst for tea that quickly spread west via oceangoing tea clippers and along the Silk Road. The famed East India Company flourished, teatime became social tradition, and cream and sugar were found to balance tea's astringency. In this guide, the Heisses outline at length the production process from tea bush to tea cup, along with the nuances of regional varietals like China's sweet green tea and India's Darjeeling. An engaging historical and cultural study, this guide is geared toward both novice and consummate consumers intrigued by the world's 2,000-year-old tea habit. (Oct.) Great book, the clear, concise wording and well thought out phrasing lead to an interested and well informed reader. I enjoyed the book, learned a few new things, and have even purchased some of their recommended teas. They definitely know what they are talking about! I have told all my tea drinking friends about this book and even given a copy as a gift. I have read all of the books I can find by these two and have enjoyed them all. A worthwhile purchase and read, without a doubt.

Of all the books I've read about tea, "The Story of Tea" (2007) by Heiss & Heiss is one of my favorites! It would make for an excellent textbook in any class or lecture about tea. It contains an abundance of information, with beautiful photographs throughout the book, many of which show cups of brewed tea along side the dry tea from which it was brewed. Their information is up-to-date, very precise, and the majority of time, very accurate. For instance (with the exception of Puerh tea), they make no bones about other tea dealers who misinformingly speak about "fermentation" instead of correctly mentioning "oxidation", telling the reader to "run, not walk" from such dealers! It is some very good advice indeed. With so much information, I only detected a few errors, which were unfortunate, but perhaps unavoidable. For example, Huang Shan Mao Feng, a famous green tea from China, is listed on page 163 as a yellow tea. On page 219, the book states that Alishan produces oolongs grown at the highest altitudes of any tea in Taiwan, when in fact the highest plantation is located at Da Yu Ling, part of the Lishan range in central Taiwan, with the highest peak located in the Yushan range, adjacent to the Alishan mountain range. Also, the book states that Bai Hao "Oriental Beauty" oolong is oxidized 35 to 40 percent, although it is oxidized closer to 70 percent, a fact that Heiss & Heiss themselves correct in their subsequent "The Tea Enthusiast's Handbook" (2010). Still, these errors are fairly insignificant when compared with everything else that is right about this book. As an Engligh tutor, what actually bothered me the most was the overusage of split infinitives ("to be" verbs separated by an adverb) and the grammatical errors when saying "different than" instead of correctly stating "different from" in sentences using comparisons. Yet again, these are only minor and should not detract too much from the overall quality of this predominately very well-written, beautifully illustrated, highly researched, and extremely informative book. It would be a great addition to the library of any tea connoisseur or enthusiast.

I don’t think I will be able to adequately do justice to how much I love this book. I looked for a book like this for a long time, but this appears to be the only one on the market. Not only is it the only one, it also does an excellent job with the subject matter. The history of tea, how the tea is manufactured, and how to prepare it are three very big and broad subjects, but the authors have done an excellent job with all of the material. I’m so grateful to have found this.

This book is absolutely gorgeous. I am an avid tea drinker and originally checked out this book from my local library. I loved it so much, I hated to return it and knew I had to have my own copy. It is beautiful, comprehensive and really well researched. I highly recommend getting the hardback edition.

Given how much I enjoy drinking tea, it's rather a given that over the years I've amassed a collection of books dealing with and about tea. Whenever I see a new book about tea, I know that eventually, it's going to be read by me. And this creates a quandary when I do -- given that there's a rather finite amount of information on the topic, eventually it all starts to sound the same, and it now takes a lot to really engage my interest.Such was the problem when I picked up The Story of Tea: A Cultural History and Drinking Guide by Mary Lou Heiss and Robert J. Heiss. Tracing the origin of tea in ancient China when a leaf from the plant fell into a cup of hot water that the Emperor was drinking from (or so myth would have it), this lavish book takes the reader on a journey from how the tea is cultivated, processed, drunk and ritualized around the world, and focusing mostly on customs in China, Japan, and mostly Asian countries. The first two chapters, A Brief History of Tea and The Life of a Tea Bush were only mildly interesting to be as they covered topics that nearly every book on tea has included. But the sidebars were interesting, and the photographs wonderfully evocative and at times sensual. It's in the third chapter, Manufacture where the story starts to get interesting. One topic I found very interesting was the history of how tea was classified in Ming China, separating the tea into six categories, depending on the age of the leaves and buds when picked, how the tea was fermented or not, and even how it was distributed. That still has remained the system today, with a few modifications. While black and green teas are known to most tea drinkers in the West, only now are the subtleties of white, yellow, oolongs and pu-erhs beginning to be known. The authors take the reader step by step on how teas are picked, graded, sorted, prepared and shipped, all of which determine how it is going to taste by the time it reaches your cup. After the first one hundred pages, the story began to catch my full attention. Titled Journeying Along the Tea Trail, takes the reader along on an excursion around the world to all of the various places ? China, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Africa and even South Carolina ? where tea is grown. It?s this vital aspect that determines how good ? or bad ? a tea will eventually be. Just like wine, each locale imparts a specific characteristic to the tea?s colour, taste, and aroma, and the terminology can also get just as confusing as when a group of wine fanatics get together to discuss a particular vintage. As the tea drinking public becomes better informed and acquainted with tea, I predict that the terminology and jargon will get just as complicated. An Encyclopedia of Tea is a brief section, unfortunately. I can understand why this section is kept small ? to have a visual guide to all of the varieties available would be far too large to ever publish. Instead, there are about thirty or so different teas that are given a description, along with a picture of the leaves and a brewed cup of tea. Much more interesting is a brief look at what are known as ?presentation? teas, where teas and blooms are tied and dried together so that when they are brewed ? preferably in a clear teapot or cup ? they transform into fantastical shapes.Brewing the Perfect Cup is just that. How to select your tea, the pot, how to find a good tea merchant, and all sorts of data on how to get that optimum brew. It?s a very short chapter, and frankly, all information that I had read somewhere else before. Much more intriguing is the next chapter, Tea Culture Around the World. Again, most of the information is focused on China and Japan, but what really works here is on the gong fu tasting ceremony, and the cha-no-yu ceremony in Japan. What sort of equipment is used, where such a ceremony will take place, foods that are eaten, and so on. I found it very interesting to read about, and two Asian cultures that tend to be overlooked got a little bit of space for themselves ? Tibet and Korea. Sadly, Western tea customs were pretty much overlooked here, which is a pity.Health Benefits of Tea, and the following chapter Ethics in the Tea Trade are bound to upset some readers. While there are certainly benefits to drinking tea ? I do it for sheer enjoyment ? you do have to be careful in sifting out the hyperbole from the reality. So too with the ethics. Tea workers have been exploited for centuries, and sadly, it still goes on. Awareness helps, and more merchants are opting to work with planters and vendors who can guarantee that their workers are being paid a working wage and given decent conditions. What is considered ethical is also a subject for debate as well, and honestly, one I intend to stay out of.The final chapter, Cooking with Tea is pretty interesting. While I haven?t tried any of the recipes yet, I know it will only be a matter of time before I do. There isn?t very many to choose from here, but they range the gamut from appetizers to desserts and sweets. The book winds up with a list of buyers resources, a glossary of expressions, a bibliography and index.Overall, I did like this book. The photographs are beautiful and compelling, at times the text is interesting to read, and I really did like the look at more obscure tea traditions in Korea, Tibet and Morocco. But some of the chapters left me cold. Despite the problems that I had with some sections, this still gets a four star rating from me. Recommended.

This is a great book, well researched and beautifully produced. It’s a large book, over 400 hundred pages but I never got bored! There is just so much information and they, Heiss and Heiss, kept me interested throughout. I highly recommend this book – fascinating and beautifully photographed.

Another really great entry in the Pathfinder Campaign Guide series. IMO Paizo really gets it right more often than not, with these types of in-depth setting books. Great art, great writing, tons of adventure hooks, and a lot of background for running the Reign of Winter AP.

I loved the detail!!! Cities, Rulers, rumors and tons of adventure hooks. This book is a must if you are planning anything in Irrisen

Does the Job, Great for the Price, Working As Expected, Would recommend to a stranger, friend, family member, old high school sweetheart...etc

The subtitle to this book in Pathfinder's Campaign Setting line immediately sums up the essence of Irrisen: it's a place of perpetual winter. Cursed by the witch Baba Yaga, Irrisen is a foreboding land ruled by witch-queens placed upon the throne by Baba Yaga herself and even the cities are full of dangerous, intelligent monsters like winter wolves, frost giants, ice trolls, and more. The peasantry are governed with strict rules and prohibited from leaving Irrisen for more inviting places, and even merchants and adventurers who travel to Irrisen from elsewhere do so at their own risk. Irrisen isn't an easy place to live, because if the weather doesn't kill you the inhabitants very well might. Although released to support the Reign of Winter adventure path (which takes place in Irrisen), this book works very well as a standalone source-book for GMs wanting to set other campaigns in the nation. The inside front cover of this 64-page book features a map of Irrisen, showing how it's been divided into six different provinces, each ruled by a different winter witch Jadwiga (descendant of Baba Yaga and of Irrisen's first queen). The first six pages of the book give an introduction to Irrisen and a history of its centuries-long rule by the winter witches. Unlike some histories of fictional lands, this one is quite interesting and has on-going resonance for the "present day" state of the setting.Next, the bulk of the book is devoted to a full summary of each of the six provinces, including their ruler, major cities, and other locations of note. Each province receive six pages of coverage, and includes a map of the province, a map of the province's capital, and a picture of a notable NPC. I won't go through the six provinces as they all share a common overall theme, but I will say I very much appreciated that a lot of work was put into making the descriptions full of adventuring hooks for a GM to exploit. Sometimes even the best GMs need inspiration, and it's much more interesting to read a source-book like this if its relevance to actual game-play is clear from the outset. After the provinces, a six-page "Plots and Perils" section provides more detail on some particular places for adventure and potential storylines to involve the PCs. Using any of these would still require a lot of work by a GM, but there's enough to plant the seeds for several adventures. There's also a few new afflictions (curses and diseases) and some supernatural weather hazards.Last, there's an extensive bestiary that includes random encounter tables for each of the provinces. I like random encounter tables, but what's missing from these is how often an encounter should take place. In addition, the vast range of CRs on the very same table (one table ranges from CR 2 to CR 17) are such that actually randomly rolling up encounters is likely to result in something either laughably easy or an instant TPK. This reduces the usefulness of the tables substantially, though they can still serve as a list of possible threats for a GM to pick from. The rest of the bestiary is quite solid. One of the really interesting features of Irrisen is that every century, Baba Yaga returns to take the current queen with her and installs a new queen on the throne; this occurrence is presaged by the appearance of the Three Riders, who pass judgment on Irrisen's inhabitants, from the lowliest peasants to the most wealthy winter witch. Each of the Three Riders receives a full page entry. After this, a new template ("Boreal") is created to make it easy to add winter flavour to any ordinary monster, and example stat-blocks of Boreal wolves, Boreal manticores, and Boreal annis hags are provided. Other new monsters include the guardians of Irrisen's borders (Sentinel Huts and Guardian Dolls), a dragon called a Khala, a giant called a Ved, and NPC stat blocks for a standard winter witch baroness and a winter witch "Cold Sister" (the land's inquisitors). Of the campaign setting books I've read so far, this one has by far the best and most useful bestiary. The artwork in Irrisen, Land of Eternal Winter is uniformly excellent. Although I think I would have preferred to see more variation from province to province, I could definitely imagine setting an entire campaign in Irrisen and using this book as my primary resource for dozens of sessions of adventure. When your players have had it too easy for too long, send their characters to Irrisen--that should shake things up![Amazon customers should note that the cover art is different than what is pictured here]

The Pathfinder Campaign Setting product "Irrisen: Land of Eternal Winter" goes into a fair amount of detail while describing the northern reaches of the Irrisen realm and the peoples of it. Notable NPCs are briefly sketched out and most significant towns are at least somewhat outlined. The Irrisen realm is, frankly, absurd in that the elites of the entire realm are almost universally, irredeemably evil and selfish, and dominated by a magical, never-ending frost that renders the world an icy wonderland for frost giants, winter wolves, and witches. On the other hand, that's what makes it so fun to adventure in; there are endless opportunities for knock-down brawls, clever subterfuge, explosive spellcasting, and breaking the power of evil and replacing it with good. It includes very good campaign hooks. This book, fairly well-written and decently organized, combined with the player-centered "People of the North," should be seen as indispensibe towards rooting any good campaign in the icy north of Golarion.Crunch: 10 new monsters (however, 2 of them are basically NPC archetypes, and 3 of them are more-or-less unique creatures) and 3 new environment-related afflictions.

This is a very detailed and well written product that supports any campaign set in Irrisen. It does a good job of detailing the politics, personalities, and interesting places withing the realm. The book is easy to use and well organised. I would say that it could be improved by adding a section of NPC's that could be easily used and a more robust section on monsters and creatures to help flesh out a weak complement of frost related creatures in the Bestiaries. If you are planning to run a campaign in Irrisen I suggest doing some reading on medieval Rus (Russia) and also looking at D&D 3.5's Frostburn.

I love this.
