Like all Rick Steves books, this is well organized and convenient. I am in Spain now and using it consistently. I studied Spanish grammar elsewhere but this book helps me at a glance say some things I have not had to communicate before. If you are traveling, this is what you need. My only advice is to be sure to listen to some spoken Spanish in advance of your travels as it will help you a lot with pronunciation (sometimes the phonetic translations of the phrases are not as good as hearing the way the basic words are pronounced). Overall, for travel, this is the best one of the three eng/span phrase books I have! Oh, this book also includes some hints on culture and context which I have found to be spot on.

Handy and durable. Easily arranged sections. Will do the job. Note however that this is European Spanish and not Latin American Spanish. I did not know this from reading the preview.

I started traveling to Europe in 2000. My high school french (50 years ago) was a surprising help in reading signs etc. But the Rick Steve's French book saved the day and let us get along well. So I'm making my first trip to Spain this fall, and this book will be in my pocket. It is small enough to justify packing it. It is complete enough in a very useful format to make you a more sucessfull traveler.My experience in Japan and France is that if you bother to learn and use 10 polite phrases, the people are appreciative and welcoming. The fact that you bothered to learn just a few phrases in their language unlocks their generous spirit, and your trip will be much better. Having the book means that if you really need to be able to read a sign or menu or other important information, you will have the help to do so.I jokingly tell my husband that all I need to know how to say is hello, please, thank you, excuse me, and how much does it cost? He handles hotel check-ins and transport signs.

I really like this book. I speak some spanish so I can see that these are real spanish translations. I like the various phrases used as examples too. There are so many things I like about this book, I'm REALLY glad that I purchased it. Oh, and the size is great, wont take up too much room in my purse.

This is a quick reference. I like how it is decided into different sections such as eating, sleeping, shopping and simple phrases. The dictionary section is quicker than using the translator on your smart phone. It is small in size making it easy to carry with you.

It was so much fun using this book in Madrid. I found that most people there also spoke English, but I had no problem being understood in Spanish while using the book.

This is a handy book, small enough to carry at all times. It's a great help for pronunciation of Spanish words. And it has quite a few phrases that will help you in many situations. Of course, in such a small book it cani't cover every situation. I'm planning a trip to Spain (on my own, not as a member of a tour group), and if I interpret Rick's Spain Guidebook correctly, many Spaniards with which I'll have to communicate don't speak English. So I'll need to learn some basic Spanish not covered in the phrase book. On the other hand, if you plan to visit Spain as part of a tour group, this may be all that you need.

This is a well-written phrase book that is a good choice for a traveler with weak Spanish. I went to Costa Rica with poor Spanish and survived with the help of this book. The topical organization (e.g. In the Airport, Dining Out, etc.) made it very easy to find the right set of words for a given situation. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is the limited verb coverage; I found that I couldn't easily express certain ideas because I couldn't find the verb to use.

Great book, very interesting.

Book is not as focused on Hip Hop as I would of hoped and is not a full production but a collage of articles

The title of Mr. Flores' book might be a little deceiving for those who are not familiar with the subject matter. Mr. Flores uses music as a jumping off point for some very thought provoking themes that pertain (in my opinion) to all Latino's. Juan Flores goes from scholarly themes like colonialism to thoughts on the funeral of Cortijo and the history of the Boogaloo phenomena in New York City.Mr. Flores makes you stop and think, then think again about issues you may have had preconceived notions about. I really enjoyed being challenged intellectually as I read this book.I recently attended a lecture/performance (at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City) of "From Bomba to Hip-Hop" conducted by Mr. Flores, music historian Rene Lopez and Mike Wallace (who won a Pulitzer Prize for his book, "Gotham.") True to form, it was a very unique, educational and entertaining experience.

As a beginning graduate student in Latina/o Studies, I have been asking myself a simple question over and over: "Where have I been?" I have gone through public education in the United States for 17 years of my life, and have only recently found that there have been people writing since the start of the 1900s about the issues, experiences, struggles, and passions that I have thought were uniquely mine. Piri Thomas published _Down These Mean Streets_ in 1967. I just read it this past summer, my mother--right after I gave it to her. And the thought that has wondered in is, "why wasn't I told about his book earlier?" Is Piri Thomas' experience, a bond with African American culture that Juan Flores addresses in his book, such a marginal experience in American life, that it took a suggestion by Amazon.com for a man with 4 years of university education to be aware of the book? As the population of Latino/as in the United States grows to the levels of being the largest minority group in the country, there will have to be a shifting of Latina/o literature, theory, and any cultural products from the margins of American life to the center contemporary discussion. It is these products that Juan Flores probes and analyses with keen insight that places the Puerto Rican aspect of the Latino experience into mainstream intellectual thought. From "the Madonna incident" in Puerto Rico, to the ties that Puerto Ricans have with Hip-Hop, and the current status of Puerto Rico that he sadly calls a "Lite Colony," Flores' book is one that should be read by anyone interested in the affairs of American culture.

While Juan Flores is perceptive in his discussion of the Puerto Rican component of Latino culture, and discusses other major critics like Perez Firmat and Stavans, I was frankly surprised not to see any discussion of William Luis's Dance Between Two Cultures: Latino Caribbean Literature Written in the United States, which in my estimation is as important as those written by the critics Flores discusses. The value of Luis's study is that he addresses the same Puerto Rican community mentioned in Flores' book, but Luis also contextualizes this community by considering its relation to the Cuban and Dominican components of Latino culture. Anyone interested in understanding Latino literature and culture should also read Dance Between Two Cultures, which contains perceptive readings of Latino Caribbean literature unavailable in any other study.

If you're at all interested in Latin American culture you'll love this book and he's an amazing person. He'll tal kto you forever about the subject and he's highly intelligent.

A significant element of the purchase is thus worthless unless your school has also paid.Now, I'm no economist (that's why I need this book!) but I'd say that paying for access to a service that is inaccessible to me is a poor use of my resources. I'll be buying future textbooks paper, and used.

Baye may try to remain current with new editions but, otherwise, I'm not impressed.The book can use some more "real world" case studies that aren't more than a half a page as chapter introductions and a half dozen or so topics on the book's website.Chapters only skim over topics, rarely link the topic back to a company application that the reader may be familiar with, and, in reality, the strategy part referred to in the title is missing.I see little research outside of the material that has been parroted from other versions of this text or similar work by other authors. Examples on how to calculate something does not equal strategy; defining what to do after collecting information is strategy and then implementing it is called execution. Perhaps Mr. Baye can read up on Jim Collins, Ram Charan, and other people who do research on corporations and maybe even include actual quotes and examples of decisions made by managers using the topics in this book? After all, managerial economics is supposed to aide people in analyzing data and making decisions.Number one managerial economics text? I don't see why.

This is a great book for a succinct, applicable overview of economics. I have an economics undergrad and use this while getting my masters. It was great to see all the concepts I learned in undergrad applied to the real world.

Author is good and he makes some interesting statements.Goes over the big 5 system of Introversion-extroversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism.I don't remember any discussion of Dabrowski's theory of personality disintegration and reintegration which is in my opinion, the most interesting thing in personality theory.Also, like a typical "great courses" the book is written at a level so the average 18 year old college air head could understand it.So each chapter starts out with some boring intro material and then becomes interesting.

Why You Are Who You Are is the great courses introduction to personality. It takes the academic approach to personality and explains it (the big 5/6 HEXACO traits: conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, and honest/humility). The lecturer explains why these are considered the most important, while also discussing minor traits.He then launches into a discussion of the heritable nature of these traits (most of them have been discovered to be 50% heritable), how upbringing and genetics interact so people express these traits differently at different times, and how the studies were made. Then there's a huge discussion of the various mental disorders, some of which I didn't know about, such as schzoid personality disorder, and narcissism.The lecture series ends up with a big discussion on what personality means, what it means to be "authentic" or "true to yourself", and how to grow resilient kids who are well adjusted (the answer to the latter is easy: read and apply the lessons in John Medina's book, Brain Rules for Baby).As someone who failed to take a single psychology course in college, I found this a useful introduction and different from the pop stuff that's out there. Recommended.

As an author, I create characters every day and this series of lectures was full of good information for bringing my imaginary characters to life, to make them real and then to know how they should be reacting with and to the other characters and events in the plot I have put them into. My only wish was that there was a Cliff Notes, or even a printed version as it would be on my shelf as soon as it could be shipped for constant reference.

Excellent narration by Dr. Mark Leary. I recommend this course without qualifications for everyone! Superb information on personality.

However, as far as I know, we don't have a religious prejudice to homosexuality at all, therefore it sounds a little bit strange that in Meiji-era the goverment of Japan made a "Sodomy Law" imitating the western countries (though directly from the Manchurian China/Qing)---- of course it was soon repealed. I prefer to read a book on male/male love of pre-Tokugawa period, since in those days, especially in Muromachi/Azuchi-Momoyama-period, male homoeroticism was most flourished and prosperous. And I also want to read about the history of male-love in Korea, Tibet and Southeastern Asia.

Pflugfelder's book, the product of 20 years of research, provides a necessary foundation for students of Japanese history and sexology. What is much more, he resists reinforcing the kinds of master narratives that this kind of history usually inforces. "Homosexual," for instance, becomes not an identity but a term situated in time and space with certain uses by and for certain people. This was such a reassuring and informative book. It reinforces that God is Good all the time and has His Eye on us in a most loving and encouraging way.

I was disappointed in this book. It was disjointed, hard to follow and repetitive. Lost interest prior to half way through but made myself keep going, hoping it would redeem itself but couldn’t quite get to the end. It was full of Scripture, which I don’t mind, but much of it seemed redundant. I was not skeptical prior to reading this, but as I was reading, certain things just didn’t ring true in my spirit.

This was excellent! For those interested seeing things from a spiritual perspective I know you will be pleased!
