In many ways this was a quick, light read based on the experiences of a young woman employed to assist a lady writer put together her Agony Aunt column for a weekly magazine during the London Blitz. But there was also a darker side with nightly bombing causing death and destruction and women struggling to terms coping with the changes to their lives brought on by the war.Emmy Lake thought she was applying for a job as a lady war correspondent and only after she started work realised she'd be working for Mrs Bird, a rather stuffy, forbidding writer opening the letters to the magazine and typing up responses. However, Emmy is a girl who always looks on the bright side of things and thinks she can still do her bit for Britain by giving advice in these difficult times. Unfortunately, Mrs Bird refuses to answer any letters dealing with "Unpleasant" matters (such as premarital sex or pregnancy with your fiance who is being posted to the front line or falling in love with a foreign airman). However, Emmy feels these sorts of letters are from women who most need their help and instead of consigning them to the bin as instructed she starts to write back to the most desperate.While often light and fluffy in tone, the novel succeeds in giving the sense of what it was like to live and work in London during the blitz. To try and get on with life and love, keeping a stiff upper lip and doing your bit, while facing daily danger and the loss of those close to you. A very enjoyable and entertaining read.
I was born in 1940 so WWII was part of my life. Therefore it is difficult for me to pass up a book about that time period. The war was a large part of everyday living so even though I was very young I do have memories of what it was like in my family.When you see photos of London after the bombings, you wonder how anyone survived. This story gave you a sense of how are able to hang on to normalcy in the face of disaster through the eyes of brave, innocent young adults and their loving, and protective families.This book had every emotion and every hope that I would have lived just as these characters did if I living their lives.
This book was such a nice surprise for me! It is absolutely deserving of 6 stars. I really loved it! It takes place in 1941 in London, as the German Luftwaffe was bombing almost nightly. The main character, Emmy Lake, is only 22 years old. That's the same age my own mother was when the war began, except she was American and we were not among the Allied Forces at that point yet. Emmy is young, and a bit immature, but she is trying to do her part by volunteering for the ladies' group who answer the phones for the local firemen when the calls of fire and causalities come in during the bombings. She also gets a part time job working for Mrs. Bird. Mrs. Bird is an older "stiff upper lip" sort who writes answers to questions on the "problems page" from readers of Woman's Friend, a low ranking woman's magazine of the day. Unfortunately, Mrs. Bird detests anything that smacks of "unpleasantness," and so most of the women who write in get no help at all. This greatly worries Emmy, who tries to help in her own way. The novel starts out slowly as we get to know Emmy and her family and friends. The British slang of the early 40's is "spot on" and makes for enjoyable reading. But the bombings grow worse and are soon far too close to home. This talented author, who did much meticulous research, soon introduces her reader to real life in wartime Britain. I was mesmerized, and Pearce made it very real. Emmy and her family and friends are in a place no one had ever imagined and they all have to grow up terribly fast. As A.J. Pearce said, "It is a privilege to look into their world and remember what incredible women and girls they all were." I can't stop thinking about this book. I highly recommend it.
This plot was like a plucky ‘50’s rom-com. I thought that the characters were too one dimensional and the plot thin. The pieces about the bombing of London were interesting and in some instances touching. None really reached the heart the way the author likely hoped. I give it a tepid recommendation
An aspiring journalist finds her dream job is not what she expected. This book entertains with humor in war time circumstances that reveal lives in tough and sometimes tragic times. It is an uplifting tale of one young woman's attempt to better her own life as well as that of others in wartime England.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was a refreshing change from what I normally read. The story is light hearted, but with a warmth and compassion that can be missing from today's stories. Highly recommended.
This debut novel by AJ Pearce is set in London during World War 2. Emmy accidentally ends up as a typist for a woman"s magazine. She begins to surreptitiously answer some of the letters to the advice column. But the book is really about being a young woman during the worst of the bombing, and about friendship. I highly recommend it - a great read.
This story was so much more than I imagined. My father was in the RAF, mid-upper gunner, during 1944 but he told me about the terrible bombing inflicted on London for months on end in 1940. This author has captured the endurance necessary and positive thinking while still sharing the effects of terrible loss and grief. I find I shall read this more than once or twice to experience the time in London during 1940 very up close and personal.
