Review
Every page is a pleasure to the eye. The layout conveys dignity and depth, and the subtleties of text and design will move us, sometimes unconsciously, to feelings and intuitions that are novel, pleasing, and uplifting. Rabbi Sacks offers us words of introduction and explanation, commentary, and an exquisite grasp of the poetry of prayer. --Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, Executive Vice President, Orthodox Union

This siddur, like most Koren books, is notable for its beautiful, clear Hebrew typography. It is printed on fine, cream-colored paper and includes an introduction, translations and notes by Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, former Chief Rabbi of Britain. It covers weekdays, Sabbaths, festivals and the cycle of life, with Torah readings for Mondays, Thursdays, Shabbat mincha, Rosh Chodesh, fast days and festivals. There are essays on the Jewish Year, Daily Prayer, Shabbat prayer, and a Guide for the Visitor to Israel, among other topics, as well as transliterations of the Rabbis' Kaddish and Mourners' Kaddish. I own a number of siddurim but this is the one I use the most.
I am not Jewish but this prayer book is amazing! If you truly want an aid to keep your mind and heart on g-d during prayers, not just a rote exercise the Koren Siddur is for you. It is not academic, nor secular - it is sacred. You see the sacredness in the explanations. You feel it in the praying the prayers. No matter your religion, this will help you draw closer to g-d if you are sincere.
I still use transliterated Siddurs for my personal davening, but the Koren Sacks Siddur is an excellent translation with Rabbi Sacks' modern Orthodox sensibilities in mind. The commentary and translation are extremely Enlightening and enrich my prayers. Koren's excellent layout and very clear font set really help for trying to improve my Hebrew. Sacks' commentary is very helpful.
I absolutely cherish this prayer book. I use it everyday and it does a fabulous job of keeping me deliberately focused. I enjoy this pray book so much in fact that I had one shipped to my Mother who was also surprised and delighted by how wonderful this book is. Very easy to use with great educational explanations. I travel each week and take this with me as it ia perfect size for travel. I highly recommend this prayer book. I will be buying this book as a primary gift for those close to me this year.
This is a wonderful Siddur. The translation is straightforward and linguistically smooth. I have been using this for months, now, and I will continue to use it for the foreseeable future. I plan to balance use of this Siddur with use of the Artscroll Siddurim. Each has advantages. Still, for a complete Siddur, this is a wonderful choice.
Have you ever wondered why almost every orthodox shul seems to use the Artscroll siddur, even though it has instructions and very right wing commentary that the congregation may not agree with? If so, you will almost certainly appreciate the Koren Sacks siddur. It is a traditional siddur. It has an excellent introduction section about prayer, it uses two slightly different excellent fonts, some actually pretty typesetting, and it differentiates kamatz gadol and kamatz katan, and shva na and shva nach. (if you don't know what those are, don't worry, it's not obtrusive). So far I like the translations. It does have instructions but somehow they seem less obtrusive to me. My only criticism of this volume is that it uses very thin paper, probably because it was printed in Israel. On the other hand, it would be much thicker and heavier if it were printed on thicker paper, so maybe it's for the best.
Looking for a Siddur(Jewish Prayerbook)? I own the "Artscroll" Hebrew/English Siddur (2 sizes); the "Siddur Eit Ratzon (Hebrew English);" a pocket size Hebrew/English Siddur published in 1950 by the Brooklyn Publishing Company (now defunct), and have read many Siddurim (Prayerbooks). I recently purchased the Koren Sacks Hebrew/English Siddur (Orthodox Union)(personal size), and I can honestly say it puts the others to shame. Not only is the hard cover beautiful, but the most important part, the inside, is awesome. The paper is a creme color, so it's softer on the eyes than white. The black print is crisp and clear, and a perfect size font to be readable (with my 49 year-old eyes, assisted by glasses), yet keep the book a handy size. The English translation is on the right instead of on the left, as most, if not all, other Siddurim, and the Hebrew is on the left. And the Hebrew script is just beautiful (specially commissioned for this Siddur). There are few notes at the bottom of the page, and the notes don't carry an "agenda." All instructions are in-text. And the English is NOT in italics, which I found irritating in the Artscroll. And unlike the Artscroll, which translates Lord as "Hashem"(which should only be used in conversation, not in prayer!), this Siddur keeps it "Lord." The English and Hebrew line up, so they are line by line and easy to follow back and forth. The Hebrew is arranged in short lines with breaks and not in long paragraphs, this enables prayer at a natural and proper pace. The pages are not cluttered and messy, but neat and unclutterd with plenty of creme space. The English sentence structure is superb. This Siddur has 2 "ribbon" markers (one red, one blue) which are extra long and of a quality material; and the binding is top notch quality and is sure to last a lifetime Looking for a Siddur? Seriously consider this one. Everyone is different, of course, but even still: if you purchase this Siddur, I doubt you'll be disappointed. Oh, and I just purchased the Koren Sacks Hebrew/English Chumash - standard size(Amazon put it at my door in 2 days!). That review will be forthcoming...stay tuned.
I can confirm that Jonathan Sachs as well as the Torah, is God's gift to mankind. His essays are a convincing instrument in awakening the spirituality lying dormant in so many of us. He leads the reader into an understanding of Jewish prayer that links us to the Infinite and calms our soul.
