I'm a native North Carolinian and have recognized many of the places Bland takes you through in this book and I appreciate the places he takes you to that I will never see. His stories are entertaining and remind me that much of what made North Carolina what it was is leaving us. Bland's book is an entertaining record of what was and what is here now.

This book was so-so to me, but if you're from the area, you'll probably like it, very nostalgic.

Review

"David lives, eats, and breathes narrative; it’s what he does and who he is. It is like he can see into people’s souls through their narratives and help them see all of who they are. When we taught together, it was evident how profound and powerful narratives are in revealing and healing our deepest shadows. Narrative Coaching illustrates this important work in a way that we can use in our work and lives. Brilliant!"-- Donna Karlin, The Shadow Coach, Canada "David is a global thought-leader in Narrative Coaching, and this book will stimulate, educate, and provide valuable insights and tools for all coaches. An essential read."-- Anthony M. Grant, PhD, Director of the Coaching Psychology Unit, University of Sydney, Australia "David is one of my favorite coaching thought leaders, shining bright as a coaching scholar. His star also radiates warmth and compassion, poured into narrative coaching, a coaching domain David founded. This book integrates the best of David’s thinking over the past 15 years. It is a rich and evocative resource for everyone interested in coaching."-- Margaret Moore, Founder and CEO of Wellcoaches "This book is a powerful source of inspiration and resources for coaches who have outgrown the simplistic and mechanical models taught in many coaching programs and who are ready to take their skills to a new level."-- Prof. Konstantin Korotov, PhD, Director of the Center for Leadership Development Research, ESMT-Berlin "David Drake charts the waters for any coach or trainer willing to help a fellow soul change the stories that bind him or her. Wonderful examples and a healthy respect for the diverse and unpredictable variability of two humans talking (or sitting in silence) makes this book entertaining as well as useful."-- Annette Simmons, Group Process Consulting, US "David has taken his doctoral research and created a globally recognized body of work. It has been a joy to watch narrative coaching evolve and David along with it. His systemic approach to developing people is on the leading edge of coaching. I highly recommend this book for both its scholarship and its profound insights on practice."-- Judy Stevens-Long, PhD, PhD Faculty, Fielding Graduate University, School of Human & Organizational Development, US "David Drake understands — truly and deeply understands — how the stories we tell about ourselves are the genesis of our identities, and from that deep awareness he has pioneered the field of narrative coaching. What an astonishing achievement, and what a potent contribution to the field of human development! If your vocation calls you now into this journey of learning, then this book is your map… and Dr. David Drake is your wise and compassionate guide."-- David Hutchens, Author and organizational story consultant "There are very few coaching approaches that are fully theory-based and also serve as a sensitive guide to practice. Narrative coaching as developed by David Drake represents an outstanding example of such an approach. It includes a skillful synthesis of the best ideas in the field of human change, made richer by his years of thoughtful refinement and integration into coaching practice. This book truly extends the knowledge of the coaching field and beyond." --Tatiana Bachkirova, PhD, Co-director of the International Centre for Coaching and Mentoring Studies, UK"Most coaches deal with the surface of life, focusing on arranging behaviors and tasks. David has a way of quickly getting to the deeper personal narrative that shapes how we perceive daily life. Once I understood the story I was living in, I had the power to change it. Behavioral changes that had been a challenge seem much less daunting now that they are tied to a deeper intention."-- Brian Lanahan, Brand strategist, US "David’s book is the most thorough and robust guide to Narrative coaching available. The tools and models are presented in easy to understand, simple and clear language. This book will be useful to both beginning practitioners as well as the most experienced coaches and leadership development specialists. But beware . . . there is a depth here that offers a limitedness guide for our learning. The simplicity belies the sophistication of this model that will stand the test of time."-- Loretta Brown, Director, New Zealand Coaching and Mentoring Centre "David Drake brings a rare combination of rigour and humanity to this long-awaited book. Rooted in both academic research and ground-breaking practice, he has written the seminal work on Narrative Coaching. I’m delighted to see this new and expanded second edition. A well-thumbed copy should be on the desk of every professional coach and anyone interested in exploring and changing the story of their lives."-- Geoff Mead, PhD, Director, Narrative Leadership Associates and Associate Fellow, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford "David gives us the inside story on Narrative Coaching and how it brings not only our stories to life but our practice as well. He shares his decades of research and coaching experience and kindly includes the reader in his own journey to better coaching. This is an inspiring and remarkably generous book. I’ll be returning to it again and again. Relax, trust, and listen. Everything we need is in the stories."-- Moya Sayer-Jones, Founder and story activist, Only Human, Australia "Wow—it is so good to read something about coaching with this degree of freshness and energy! It offers a genuine and helpful alternative by highlighting narrative as a key way to understand and appreciate one’s patterns and life events. Whatever you are doing right now, just stop and read this book; you won’t be disappointed!" -- Professor Bob Garvey, Faculty Head of Research, York St. John Business School, UK "This is a book for anyone who is seriously concerned with the business of personal and professional transformation. It is written with great authority—an authority grounded in many years of diligent scholarship and reflective practice. Most importantly it tells the 'story' of narrative coaching in an engaging way, and it is very accessible and practically useful. I can see our students benefiting enormously from it." --Gordon Spence, PhD, Director, Master of Business Coaching, Sydney Business School/University of Wollongong, Australia"This book is a superb guide to narrative coaching and an important and innovative resource. It is a must-have for any coach wishing to develop new perspectives on their skills in helping clients reflect on their experience and test new stories for themselves. Narrative Coaching offers plenty of practical advice, underpinned by David’s unique and ground-breaking theory about how people develop through coaching."-- Sunny Stout-Rostron, DProf, University of Stellenbosch, School of Business, South Africa "David has created a multifaceted book that offers a scholarly text on narrative coaching. . . . It is a lovely book, written as though we are walking with him on a long pilgrimage. The book encourages “listening” to familiar tales differently and being open and attentive to the moment when people seek new stories. This book will become a highly valued reference for people interested in narrative work."-- Ann Whyte, Former Managing Director, Whyte & Co, Australia "Listen to the story behind the story . . . that is what I take away from David’s work. As coaches, we often get hung up on getting on with business and changing behavior. David is always reminding us to help each other learn how our stories affect us and can be realized to set free our potential."-- Lew Stern, PhD, Senior Advisor to the Institute of Coaching, Co-founder and Director, The Executive Coaching Forum "This is a deeply thoughtful yet highly practical account of narrative coaching. David Drake has made a significant contribution to the field of coaching, not just to narrative approaches. I highly recommend this book."-- Professor David Lane, Professional Development Foundation and Middlesex University, UK "This book by David Drake represents a great contribution to the field. Narrative Coaching represents a powerful framework for helping clients find meaning and develop new perspectives effectively and efficiently. It integrates seamlessly with existing theoretical foundations while adding a deeper sense of humanity into the coaching conversation!"-- Wade Azmy, CEO, Pharos Institute (Asia Pacific) "David Drake’s work with Narrative Coaching gives you a new mindset, useful frameworks and specific questions to ask yourself or your coachees in critical moments. Based on sound theory and practice, it is food for the brain and the soul. Absorb what is in this book and you will be a better leader and coach."-- Carol Kauffman, PhD, Founder, Institute of Coaching "David works as a scientist practitioner, and this is one of the greatest strengths of his work. His ability to navigate academic rigour and to work effectively with robust organisational cultures has produced a high impact coaching methodology that delivers change in thinking, feeling and decision making for those who experience it."-- Terri Mandler, Former Group Head, Leadership & Learning, QBE Insurance Group. Pty. Ltd. "With a passion for narratives and stories that began early in life, David Drake offers an approach to coaching that integrates different theoretical positions—from psychodynamic to social constructionist—into a coherent and striking bouquet. Reflective practitioners will value this book as an inspiring and insightful source for their professional development." --Reinhart Stelter, PhD, Coaching Psychology Unit, University of Copenhagen, Denmark

In this book, David has communicated some valuable insights and practical tips for enhancing the practice of development coaching, such as using the coaching session as an "in the moment" laboratory for live simulation of new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving by the coaching recipient that can potentially resolve their core development issue/need. On the less effective side, he shares these useful points in a format that is heavily burdened by a fascination with layers and layers of jargon (that could be clearly expressed in far more accessible, commonplace terms) and an intensive use of reference citations (often simply 1 - 4 words in length) that add very little to his core poimts and make most of the book read like a PhD thesis rather than an experienced practitioner's guide. Similarly, his use of diagrams and images to better illustrate some of his key points, while an admirable attempt to access visual communications, often seem to complicate the message rather than better reveal it. For example, he often uses boxes and triangles (which are inherently fixed and rigid images) where the intended purpose seems to be one of illustrating organic, fluid processes and perceptual experiences. Overall, the book could be condensed to half its current length and, thereby, deliver a far more powerful and satisfying gain for the reader.

Half of the book is devoted towards explaining how the model was derived. It took to long. I like the model but never really got a feel for how a session would like and feel like. I imagined coaches with a dedicated practice would be able to use the model. I found I had lost interest by the time the practical elements were discussed.

This represents a lifetime’s worth of work from a brilliant man - thoughtfully organized to support coaches and individuals on their journeys through the thresholds and transitions of life. Can read it in a week and spend a lifetime trying to apply its wisdom and practices.

An absolutely must read for every coach! This book will transform the way you meet your clients' needs as their coach as well as transform how you view youreself! It is written plainly and is easy to digest. You will find yourself putting the material into action immediately! Each chapter is a treasure trove of information and the books builds upon itself the further into it you read. This is my go-to as a Coach!

This book is a sumptuous and resounding boost to my coaching self. I have become cynical and tired of the 'coaching' theme and attempted for years to find another way to describe what I do. My industry is pungently over-exposed to 'coaches' who over-promise and grossly under-perform, thus eroding the joy for me and receptivity of others to it's boons. I have been losing faith.David B Drake does a lovely job of bringing me back to all the elements of coaching that have lit up my professional practice for 30 years. It is not a book for the timid - he packs his decades of insights, growth and enthusiasm into this portable book, so be prepared to take your time and savour it. This is not fast food, this is an enriching feast that will feed you for a very long time.

Drake provides the the theory, the research and practicle examples behind the critical components of Narrative Coaching. This is a must read for anyone serious about supporting others in bringing about desired changes in their lives.

Only part way through, but I"m loving it!

Liked the most: The thorough exposition of the topic and subjects. Liked the least: Too dense in some spots.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar by Roald DahlAs a child I was enthralled with Roald Dahl’s Hammer House of Horror series on the TV, as a father I delighted in reading all his children’s books, and now I got to his short stories for adults - The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar – collection. In addition to (spoiler alert) the card-trick-yogi being a modern reincarnation of Robin Hood converting money from casinos into orphanages, he has six other stories – all worth reading. The magic of these stories is the elegance of the plot and the way the main characters effortlessly weave the story. Seven stories like seven rivers or streams. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is definitely a river in this classification, undulating from beginning with a bored rich English bachelor who cheats on his friends, to an Indian who is more than a conjurer, to the temptation and metamorphosis of Henry Sugar. (Spoiler alert: he doesn't sell his soul like Doctor Faustus, and doesn’t turn into a cockroach; it is almost the opposite). The Hitch-hiker, The Boy Who Talked to Animals and The Swan are more like fast moving streams. Each treat honour and danger in different ways. The Swan was for me the most terrifying – a tale of two extraordinary bullies and their victim. The collection also contains two non-fiction pieces - The Mildenhall Treasure and A Piece of Cake. The Mildenhall Treasure is more a slow-moving river - an honourable farmer ploughs a field and… I won’t say more. Read it. A Piece of Cake is the story that launched Roald Dahl’s career and is about the author’s plane crash in the war, echoing (in a very different way), the crash of Antoine de Saint Exupery, or the artist Joseph Beuys. Three amazing artistic careers were launched by these near-death experiences. Not to be recommended as a means of literary or artistic development of course! The collection also contains advice from Roald Dahl on writing and how he became a writer, and his childhood at school, which reminds us that schools aren’t what they used to be; in this case that is a good thing. So, for writers looking for tools of the craft – Roald Dahl’s advice is to find a good plot. Keep paper handy and write down plots when they come to you. A sentence can be enough, even a single word - seeds for future stories.

An interesting start for a budding young Roald Dahl, who would eventually give us some of the greatest children's writing this side of Harry Potter. There's British wit, wonder and magic, but what makes this book special for me is that it isn't the same whimsical, occasionally eerie voice Dahl would later adopt for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Danny The Champion of the World, etc. These seven stories offer a more straightforward, workmanlike prose; the work of a magazine writer earning a living, rather than a legend spinning another bestselling tale. As a result, these read more like kid-friendly general audience short stories than many Dahl books (if you've read compilations of his work for adults, you're aware that they are decidedly NOT for younger audiences). For an advanced young reader, it's perfect, and for an adult, it's a light, joyous read.

He insults gay people, if I remember correctly, by implying the man who found the loot was gay. That was annoying. The treasure story about the loot is somewhat fabricated if you read about the historical record. Still good reading. I pulled up some cards and tried to guess the color and suite. I got about six in a row and thought I was Nostradamus.

I bought this in Kindle form and my young kids (ages 8-11) and I took turns reading paragraphs aloud over the summer break. We especially enjoyed the story of Henry Sugar, the hitch hiker, and the buried treasure. We didn't like the story about the little boy who was bullied and tortured by two thugs. We were hoping something bad would happen to the bullies but it never happened.

This was a book I loved as a tween and teen, and have now been introducing my children to, reading a story or part of one each night before bed. It helps children make the move from Dahl's stories for children, all about chocolate and magic and redemption for oppressed children, to his stories for adults, with stories that verge from magical realism to stories that are real but just highly unusual, like finding buried treasure or meeting a very skilled pickpocket. We've read the first few, and are now in the middle of the title story, "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar," which contains a story within a story and is longer and absolutely enthralling. I would recommend that parents of tweens and even younger teens skip over "The Swan" until their children are old enough to handle it. It's a beautifully written story, but could be pretty disturbing for sensitive children.

Very good - most of the stories are very believable. I think the best, most believable is the story "The swan" in spite of its somewhat unpleasant subject matter. This is definitely not your typical Roald Dahl book. There are no fearsome Snozzwangers, no friendly Fluffywuffies, and no grizzly deaths, just good wholesome reading, so whether I'd recommend this book to your child depends on what they want in a book

This collection of short stories by Roald Dahl brought back some memories from when I was a kid of maybe 8 or 9 years of age. I'd lost my copy of it years ago and forgotten about it until last night. I looked it up and it's a steal for five or six dollars for the Kindle edition. It's great to pass the time on a trip while en route to your destination, and at roughly a dollar a story, well worth buying and reading it again, even if it's been 20 some years have passed

Obviously if you're a dog lover you'll REALLY enjoy this book but it's not just for dog lovers. I've had friends read it who don't own dogs and they thought it was wonderful. It's not just about a dog, it's about life. Believe the hype. It's great.

This is a book for dog lovers, and for those who have been loved by a dog. The Grogans may not have been the best dog trainers in the world, and they may have made a common mistake of buying their dog from a backyard breeder, but what they did right was they loved their dog, and stayed devoted to him through his whole life, from puppyhood to old age. In this throwaway society, where many people consider pets to be "disposable", to be dumped at the pound when they are no longer a cute puppy, or when they start misbehaving, the Grogans did what all responsible pet owners should do. They stuck with Marley, they tried to learn, they tried obedience classes, they worked with their vet to help control Marley's issues, and they actually considered their dog a part of their family, through good and through bad. Marley was one lucky dog, to have been owned by a family who loved him for who he was, and loved him for his whole life. Every dog should be so lucky. It really made me remember all the beautiful amazing times with my beloved dog who passed away, and it made me sad that she is gone.I hope my review has been helpful to you. It encourages me to continue writing and updating my reviews. Please leave a comment if you have any questions, I will be more than happy to answer if I can be of help.

This is not such a horrible book, as many would like you to believe. Sure, it isn't a jaw-dropping epic or an amazingly sappy story, but it is a good read that you can enjoy.I think I feel bad for the people who criticize John and his wife for how they treated Marley. First, it wasn't that horrible. In fact, Marley had it pretty good. A lot of people are failing to place the story in its proper time frame. Marley was born in the early 1990s--a time when positive training, counter conditioning, and clicker training were just beginning to take root and was not easily available to the public. Most people never even heard of such things---even very good vets. Dominance and Alpha theory were the rule of the day, and the choker chain was a common accessory for most dogs. I recall my own dog wearing one of those things, though I was a timid person who hated them and never actually used them.True, that didn't excuse several things that Mr. Grogan thought or did. He wasn't the best person in the world...but then again, he didn't hide it either. I give him brownie points for that. Most people try to make themselves seem better than they were, but the author laid himself out pretty honestly. How many people would write down that they actually found a sadistic pleasure in choking their dog during training class? He even put it in a negative light, showing that he was well aware that this was not a good thing. But anyone who has had a problem dog understands this feeling. It happens--frustration, anger, uncertainty can build up like that.A lot of people condemn the title of the book: Life and Love with the world's Worst dog. Hyperbole is often frowned upon, true, however---he addresses this at the end. Again, he brings to light something anyone with a problem of any kind knows: that feeling of being the only one. He even foreshadowed this when he described his first dog training class. All the other dogs were well mannered and lined up exactly as they should, while Marley ran rampant and drooled over everything. For years, he never met or knew of any dogs that behaved like Marley: until he wrote Marley's life down. Then he realized that he wasn't alone, that he didn't have the *worst* dog. While he jokingly refers to the Bad Dog Club and all its members, he also writes a very telling line: "My new friends in the Secret Brotherhood of Dysfunctional Dog Owners." It is a subtle admittance that he now realizes that, yes, he was not the best of owners and he failed on many accounts--some of which he had no way of really dealing with at the time.John Grogan did everything he could with the tools he had. I dislike his seeking the cheapest, shadiest dog training school (parking lot?) but I honestly don't recall dog training classes being anything more than in someone's house or rented community center at the time (I was a teen then, and didn't look so I can't say for sure).I'm divided on his ill-timed vacation, too. I mean, there was no way he could have predicted what would happen. Even the vet didn't know when or where, only that it was a possibility. He made sure to put Marley in the best care with the people that loved him and wanted the best for him, and when he came back: the dog was mostly fine! Most likely, it was the excitement of seeing his family again that did it, but who knows? Having lost a few pets of my own over my lifetime, and knowing that our own lifes go on, I can't really condemn him for it or blast him for such a horrible choice because...he really couldn't have known. It was very possible that Marley would have gone on for another couple of years, or would have passed at any moment. What stands out in this book is that John Grogan truly loved Marley. His family really cared for him, and they did the best they could. I think the reason why this book is so popular is because it resonates with the average person: the ones who don't or didn't know that they could have helped their dog overcome their phobia, could have taught him to properly direct his energy--that it was possible to have the "good dog" he wanted with a lot of hard work. At the time, there was no "hard work" only sighs of "too bad." I think he knows better now, at least I hope he does. By the time he wrote this book and published it, all the information he could have used began to be more widely available. Perhaps he regrets what he didn't know, or maybe he uses these things with his new dog. This isn't really a book about what not to do. It is more a book about what used to be. In that respect, it is actually pretty accurate.

This is just the kind of hilarious, fun book I like to read, but because I saw the movie, I almost never read books AFTER I’ve seen the movie. For me it’s the other way around: I read the book and see the movie, usually to see how much better the book was. It’s been a long time since I saw the movie, so I gave the book a chance, and I’m glad I did—the humor and endless comedy was a blast. Marley destroyed countless pieces of furniture and screen doors. He routinely ate things like parts of their stereo equipment and once, a gold necklace that was a gift from author John Grogen to his wife, Jenny. Grogen then reports in hilarious detail being on poop patrol in his attempt to rescue the expensive necklace from Marley’s prodigious defecation offerings to their backyard.Everything about the book is funny or touching. Even the birth of their first child was told in hysterical detail.Marley got kicked out of obedience school the first time for being too incorrigible. When they went back many months later, he did manage to pass—and he quickly snatched his diploma from John’s hands and ate it.If you’ve ever shared your life with a dog (even cats like to destroy plants, especially if they’re hanging and they can pounce on them from any surface and yank them out of the wall so you come home to dirt and plant shreddings spattered across your carpeting. They also like to topple books from shelves and sit on your keyboard while you’re on deadline for work), you’ll identify with the funny stories of how much work animal companions can be, and how much we miss them when they’re gone. If you live in a place that doesn’t allow animals, you’ll also feel a little better about how simple and unencumbered your life is, but you’ll feel a wistful sense of loss, too.

What a wonderful book. We had a Lab/Shepherd mix for 15 years who was the image of St Shaun, but his heart was just like Marley’s. Thirty years after his death, I still se little clones running around Lake Placid. He was a busy boy. Seeing his 3rd, 4th and 5th generation descendants make me miss him still. Marley has brought back all that love like nothing else I’ve ever read.
