Medicare Meltdown: How Wall Street and Washington are Ruining Medicare and How to Fix It, by Rosemary Gibson

Review

...Bolsters the case we have been making that Medicare must be preserved and strengthened... without shifting costs to seniors who are already paying a large share of their modest incomes for health care. (Max Richtman, president and CEO, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare)A thoughtful contribution to the debate surrounding the future of Medicare. (Bernie Sanders, U.S. Senator)Rarely have I felt as justified in supporting a book. Any person who cares about American public life, politics or their own personal well-being should closely read this book. (Amitai Etzioni, professor, George Washington University; founder of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics)A riveting read, this eyebrow raising and pupil dilating book frames 'entitlement' in a new light and uncovers some inconvenient truths. (Jennie Chin Hansen, former CEO of American Geriatrics Society, past president of AARP)The most powerful analysis of Medicare I have seen in my career. (Jean E. Johnson, dean, School of Nursing, The George Washington University)Courageous authors like Rosemary Gibson and Janardan Prasad Singh are shining a spotlight on how Wall Street and the health care industry's sense of entitlement are contributing to the financial meltdown of Medicare. (Randy Block, Gray Panthers National Board)After exposing the hidden impact of medical errors, Rosemary Gibson and Janardan Prasad Singh take on financial and political intrigues in the Medicare program. Medicare Meltdown is a lively polemic, leaving no prisoners in a provocative exposé of the $600 billion Medicare program. (Kip Piper, president, Health Results Group, LLC)This expose is quite readable. It is shocking, depressing, and educational. Everyone should read this book. (American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy)

This book has a new take on what is wrong with Medicare and how to fix it. In placing the blame on Washington and Wall Street, the authors make a compelling case. What is meant by Washington is clear -- it's big government. Wall Street includes for profit hospitals, big pharma, medical equipment makers and more. Seems to me they are talking about more examples of crony capitalism (sometimes called corporate welfare.) This is no doubt a huge problem for our country that goes well beyond healthcare. What the authors seem to ignore is the demographic problem, i.e., retiring baby boomers, etc. Still anyone interested in finding solutions to controlling health care costs will find this a very interesting read

Clearly gives examples of both congressional inaction due to special interest lobbying groups and the "Business of Medicare". both of which have put the entire program in financial jeopardy now and into the near future.Gives examples of the Wall Street involvement with hospital corporations, doctor specialty groups and even hospice takeovers motivated by deception and monetary greed as the primary driver to get Medicare money, especially with the illegal billings of many professional organizations. This is a valuable expose of the excesses of lobbying of both houses of congress and special groups against the entire Medicare program's long-term survival. We now borrow 40 cents of every dollar paid out by Medicare from China and other countries, which is totally out of line with the reality of how the program should work for current and future American retirees!

This is a book for read for those who want to understand why our health care system is never going to succeed unless we can separate the profiteers and return to the true art of healthcare and the Hippocratic oath - Greed and big business - for profits are stealing our health care dollars and taking lives every second - read it!

More people should read this book. We need to protect this program. Excellent book recommend it tothe readers who like to be informed and are interested in saving this program.

Excellent reading! Good information on the subject - so much so that I purchased to more copies of the book to give to some colleagues of mine.

Medicare Meltdown is the most provocative book that I have read for a very long time. Seniors' entitlement to Medicare is not what is driving Medicare over the cliff. The health care industry's sense of entitlement to Medicare's money IS driving it over the cliff. The most powerful lobbying efforts in the world have slithered their way into the healthcare industry, taking a strangle-hold on MedicareEverything that you may have thought about healthcare but were afraid to ask is covered in this book. As healthcare gobbles up nearly one-fifth of the economy, the shadows of Wall Street antics explain why costs are so high.Learn about how much money is wasted every day by hospitals throwing away expired supplies that you paid for but archaic laws force them to buy. Understand that the same Wall Street manipulation that nearly caused our economy to collapse now has sunk its gritty teeth into your healthcare. Think of your hospital as a caring or religious institution that is a safe haven? Maybe, maybe not.Seniors and future beneficiaries don't stand a chance in the traditional blind trust of medicine that they once knew. We can no longer take medical advice as gospel when so many special interests manipulate those entrusted with our lives.

Along with Time magazine's March story, "Bitter Pill" this well-written and easy to read work helped me more fully appreciate the financial forces at work in the health care industry, where the 800-pound gorillas aren't health insurers but rather hospitals and medical supply companies who enjoy unchecked latitude in passing their "costs" downstream to those who pay them, whether individuals, insurers or -the focus of this book- taxpayers, seniors and the Medicare program.I was, however, disappointed that the authors' principal theme (the transformation of the health industry into the play-field of aggressive profit-seeking corporations loyal only to stockholders instead of its customer/patients since the establishment in the 1960's of Medicare and its 'ask-no-questions' and 'pay-immediately-for-services-billed' reimbursement system in the 1960's) didn't extend to even mentioning the potential of redirecting this industry's loyalty to its customers/patients by requiring them to be 'mutual corporations' owned by policy holders, not nameless, faceless shareholders distant and disinterested in the delivery of health care to those needing it.Despite the book's general shortcoming in more fully attending to the "how to fix it" in its sub-title, the authors have succeeded in shining light on many dark corners -corners intentionally kept dark by those whose interest is to keep them in the dark- of a highly-profitable industry that continues to feast upon $600 billion a year of our money while insulating itself from ordinary competitive pressures typical in open markets."The Seven Habits of an Entitled Health Care Industry" is perhaps the most eye-opening chapter in the book. The truths it exposes are so basic, the chapter should be required reading in high schools so to prepare our youth to spot structural flaws in our society's most important institutions from education to finance to health care.

Mr. Tim E. Robertson like many others have been deceived into believing that a "MAC" is a real computer. If it's NOT a PC with Windows it is NOT a real computer !

The popularity of the wireless networking of personal computers is rapidly growing, especially for laptop users. Wireless networking goes by several monikers; Apple calls it AirPort, many PC manufacturers call it Wi-Fi, and techies refer to its official name of 802.11b. Most business oriented hotels, and airport frequent-flyer lounges now provide Wi-Fi access, and boutique coffee shops are adding wireless networking to attract and keep customers. If you want to share your Internet access at home between several computers, be they Macs or Windows machines, wireless networking is becoming more and more affordable. But there is often more to this technology than meets the eye. I have a Mac; do I have to buy Apple-branded equipment? What access point (the Base Station, in Apple-speak) do you buy? What wireless card do you buy? What about security?Shelley Brisbin's Build Your Own Wi-Fi Network is aimed at end users wanting to learn more than just the basics of how to get your Wi-Fi up and running. Brisbin's extensive experience authoring computer books and articles (nine books and many articles) helps her to thoroughly cover the subject. Will this book be useful to the average Macintosh owner who wants to go wireless, be it with Apple's AirPort equipment, or third-party hardware? At first glance, the distinctly Windows orientation of the book appeared to make it less-than-useful to Mac users. But Brisbin is careful to be fairly platform agnostic; each section includes Mac information. Since many wireless routers are configured via a web browser, the screen shots are perfectly useful to Mac users. Ironically, Apple's own AirPort Base Station is one of the few wireless access points not configured via a web browser! If all you want is a quick and dirty overview of wireless networking, Build Your Own Wi-Fi Network may be a bit much. But if you want a basic grasp of the fundamentals of how 802.11b works, without being overwhelmed with too much information, Brisbin provides it. She is able to walk that fine line between too much and not enough detail. All aspects of wireless are covered, including sections on antennas, multiple access points, wireless-to-wired networking issues, and many more.Build Your Own Wi-Fi Network covers what to look for in both access points, and wireless cards. Several brands are discussed. This kind of information is platform agnostic, so don't let the Windows screenshots and references dissuade you.Brisbin devotes plenty of time to discuss wireless networking security in detail. Many wireless users are not aware of how exposed their networks can be. Even if they do, they don't know how to decide how much security to implement. The chapters on security are very valuable, and every purchaser of this book should read this section carefully. You may be more exposed than you think! Again, the information Brisbin provides is fully applicable to Macintosh users. If you want a thorough grounding in wireless networking fundamentals, this book should be high on your list.MacMice Rating: 4 out of 5------------------------------------------------------------------------David Weeks

The book content is good, but the packaging was terrible. The book and cover were bent, leaving permanent creases in it.

OK book knew all that was in it nothing new
