Gr 6-9-Framed as the president relaying his biography to his young son Tad, this comic refreshingly covers Lincoln's early frontier life as well as his presidency. That said, it treats his administration in a skewed way, presenting slavery not just as the primary issue of the day, but also as the only issue Lincoln faced during his term. Historians might take issue with that, and it might be a good idea to use this graphic novel in tandem with more historically accurate sources. Still, the facts and appended trivia present information that not everyone with a passing familiarity with Lincoln may know. The effort to humanize him by recounting his story alongside tragic family events, including the death of three of his four children before they reached the age of 20, is interesting. The art isn't much help, as many of the figure sketches and bland coloring seem rushed and possibly incomplete. I'm using this graphic novel for my 13 year old to supplement our trips to Gettysburg and Antietam. It's informative, interesting for kids and adults and illustrated beautifully.

This product says it is for 10 years plus - it is a comic book. Very disappointed.

This Campfire Heroes Series graphic biography tells the story of Abraham Lincoln, who famously rose from a humble birth in a Kentucky log cabin to become President of the United States. The narrative is provided by author Lewis Helfand; Manikandan did the illustrations.Abraham Lincoln grew up on the American frontier under very humble circumstances. As the story tells it, he was blessed with remarkable intelligence and a stepmother who encouraged him to learn. His work ethic, honesty, and ambition enabled him to overcome poverty and to survive the loss of family members and loved ones. An early hatred of slavery is shown as driving Lincoln's political ambitions. He would become president just as the young United States fell into a terrible civil war over that very issue. Lincoln would lead the nation through perhaps its darkest hours to the end of the Civil War and the adoption of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, ending slavery in these United States.The dramatic narrative provides surprising good detail on Lincoln's youth and early adulthood. However, the story of Lincoln's mature years is simplistically focused on the issue of slavery, to the detriment of Lincoln's political skills and achievements as a wartime president. The quality of the artwork is unfortunately a little erratic, while the depiction of the Civil War is not particularly accurate. "Abraham Lincoln From the Log Cabin to the White House" is suitable for an elementary school readership, and recommended to that audience.

This graphic novel is very entertaining as well as informative. The only 'Lincoln era' issue dealt by author (Lewis Helfand) is that of slavery and Lincoln's fight against it. Its sure to be a great quick read for people who would like to know about Lincoln, the man before exploring him further in one of numerous books on him. The sketching by Manikandan (from a southern state of India) is praiseworthy. Overall, I would say - Highly recommended!

I purchased this book with high hopes but was very disappointed. I should clarify that the book, while very simplistic, is pretty good at listing and describing the "10 Traits of Successful Entrepreneurs." It is a good list and the descriptions are very clear and helpful. When I went online to take the assessment, I was very disappointed in the reporting provided after completing the assessment. The book and website clearly state that knowing both the traits that you possess and the intensity with which you possess them is an important component of identifying your entrepreneurial talents. The report is merely a listing, in order, of the 10 traits based on your answers. The implication is that everyone possess the 10 traits and that you should focus on the top four. Unfortunately, there is no indication of a "score" or the level to which you possess the traits. So, a person who has no real potential for entrepreneurship will get the same report as a successful serial entrepreneur. In fact, these two people could potentially receive the same report with the same traits listed in order. I guess they might have some different bullet points as their "action plan" but there are only three bullet point descriptions and then four "action plan items" which are very generic. I am having a very difficult time finding any value in this assessment for truly identifying the presence and level of the 10 entrepreneurial traits from which a person would work through their decision to become (or not) an entrepreneur. It was not a complete waste of $15 but close.

I’m a big fan of Gallup’s strengths-based approach, but this book was not up to the standards of their previous books. The book itself is small, with widely spaced text, i.e., it’s shorter and less in depth than one might except. The writing is adequate, but in places it’s redundant or doesn’t flow logically. Part 1 felt like an unnecessary 30-page diatribe about how to save the American economy (through entrepreneurship naturally). Part 2 (what city leaders should do) was all of 2.5 pages. Part 3 finally got to the 10 entrepreneurial strengths. While the strengths made sense, there was very little detail about how they were determined (well, research, yes, got it); one of the things I loved about prior books was the explanation of the data analysis/meta-analysis. The report delivered after taking the profile was almost useless. As other reviewers noted, it only shows your strengths in order; there is no other context around how high or low you scored. It doesn’t even beak the strengths into the three categories described in the book (dominant, contributing, supporting). The book (and the report in abbreviated form) describes people with high levels of each skill, but does not offer anything beyond "get help" for those who are low in particular areas (and of course how would you know?). Finally I got really sick of the same people being used as examples. I’ve got nothing against Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Michael Dell et al, but 1) the book felt lazy in terms of depth and breadth of examples chosen and 2) when I hear the word "entrepreneur," these are sure not the people I think of.

The author's contention about our human capabilities are controversial in that some entrepreneurs will never have the mental intelligence to do better than what they're born with. I find this astonishing in this age of brain and performance research. Granted, there are innate talents that some have over others but the main predictor of one's success must be considered within the context of environment, training, mentors, resources and a bit of luck. My experience with working with residents of some of the poorest communities in America say that what the author contends is wrong. What I did find of value is the actual researcher, Sangeeta Badal, Ph.D, who compiled the data from 2500 entrepreneurs. She classified the 10 talents of successful entrepreneurs and uses it to help you identify where you're strong and weak. This allows you to strengthens your weaknesses and take advantage of your strengths.

Ever have something mislabeled be so awesome and yet still so wrong?It's not quite as bad with this book, but there is nothing really entrepreneurial about it. They give you a profile of your action abilities that might fit into a entrepreneur's mindset, but it isn't as though it will tell you what you'll excel in or be best at like the Strengthfinder 2.0 book.I'd say get it to take the test, read what it says about you, and then think about what that means to you. It won't open the universe to you, but it can help you frame your universe a bit better.
