We are used to Rick Steve guides. This one is basic and not so helpful.We found Japan guide website much more helpful and invaluable to everything we did on our trip. Would skip this book.

Its okay and the concise topics and suggested itineraries are helpful. Needs more photos and the text size is way too small. Need magnifying glasses.

I bought this for my son for a trip to Japan, he stated that the map was a good resource while he was there.

This was very helpful and informative. Combined with the info we got from the concierge, we had what we needed.

This is an interesting and informative travel guide to Tokyo, Japan. Years ago I stopped over in Tokyo a few times during my transpacific flights. Each stopover was a day or two but I ventured into different districts so I had a pretty good idea of what Tokyo offered in terms of culture and sights. In reviewing this guide, I found myself enjoying its contents and thought it was pretty informative and inclusive in the districts that I had visited, such as the Imperial Palace, Akihabara, Roppongi and Shinjuku.The book begins with an informative introduction to Japan, which are the two first chapters: Experience Tokyo and A Japanese Culture Primer. They account for 1/3 of the book and are a good read to get yourself familiar with what Tokyo has to offer and the Japanese culture and way of life. The rest of the book covers the popular tourist districts in Tokyo as well as where to eat and sleep. The final chapter offers interesting side trips that you can make to the neighboring cities and areas.The guide does a pretty good job of covering the Tokyo, at least in the districts that I had visited. There are many suggestions on popular destinations including museums, shrines, gardens and other local attractions such as the Imperial Palace, Tokyo Tower as well as Mori Tower in Roppongi and the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden in Shinjuku.If you consider eating, lodging, nightlife, performing arts and shopping as an important part of your travel plan, this guide has a lot to offer. There are separate chapters on those. You'll probably find something for everyone.If you are planning to visit neighboring cities and areas, you'll find some good ideas in this guide as well. There is a chapter on side trips to Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park (to climb Mt Fuji), Niko, Kamakura and Yokohama. There is also a section on essential Japanese phrases that will come in handy.One thing I found lacking is the maps. They are mostly local maps that are good for orientation but not detailed enough to find your own way to get there. Also, they are few and far between. I wish it would include a pull-out map that provides a bigger map with more details.Overall, this is a great resource for planning a trip to Tokyo as well as carrying with you for on-location references when you get there. It is informative and pretty comprehensive. I would suggest to get a large Tokyo map as well as a Tokyo Metro transit map that you can actually read (the one in the guide is tiny and unreadable). The Metro is the main form of transportation and it is one of the most complicated in the world. You'll need a good Metro map to bring with you since you probably may not find one in English at the stations.

This dictionary is just OK.Pros:Convenient sizeJapanese to English & English to Japanese sectionsWords are shown written in both Japanese Kanji/Kana and Romanji (you can only look words up via the Romanji version)Cons:Pronunciation not broken down for you as an English dictionary would doVocabulary isn't comprehensive (I'm learning the language and though I'm not an advanced speaker there are words I know that aren't in this book).As expected in a pocket-sized book, the writing is small. This isn't a problem for me, but for anyone who has difficulty reading small lettering this might be an issue.

The actual amount of vocabulary and the kind of words it has is certainly better than I expected. It's only draw back for people who are serious about learning the kana is that it has too much romaji.(meaning the Japanese words are written in the English alphabet) This is fine for those who are dedicating themselves to spoken Japanese only, For those who are trying to learn written Japanese though Romaji is a crutch best abandoned early. If you get to used to looking up a word with its Romaji spelling than it will be very difficult for you to find words in more advanced dictionaries that don't use Romaji. Even though this dictionary has more words i also recommend Oxford's Beginners Japanese Dictionary so that you can become more familiar with the way words are organized according to their Hiragana and Katakana spelling.

It’s pretty good but some words in here I’d never use willingly or on a daily basis....like latch or embassy amongst others. But it’s still good and nice pocket size, but words are tiny!

It's small and not bulky but contains a lot of useful definitions for times I'm not allowed to have a phone or my electronic dictionary out. Which is very useful in school.

The one pictured is not the one I received. The one I got is quite a bit smaller (about 3"x4") and has a green and yellow vinyl cover. It's still a great dictionary (which is why I gave it 3 stars), but it's got that tiny print that is kinda hard to read. I am going to keep it, because it will be good to keep in a pocket while out and about, but I am still gonna try to find the one I really wanted elsewhere.

I live in Alaska, and enjoy exploring new waters; I try to get in at least one major trip each year. This book offers a brief survey of over 100 rivers, with an effort to cover systems in each of the major regions of Alaska.Most of the river descriptions are 2 to 3 pages; the information usually contains a map showing the most common put-in and take-out spots, then a brief description of the overall character of the stream with some of its standout features. A few paragraphs of historical notes are often added. Following the description of the river is a section of useful data: appropriate USGS topo maps; the best seasons for floating; specific safety issues; prominent fish and wildlife likely to be seen; and a list of the government land management agencies who oversee the river and adjacent territory.The book also contains some nice sections at the beginning on trip planning, with sections on appropriate gear for a river trip, trip safety, and ethical camping practices.The structure of the book means it probably shouldn't be looked at as a detailed trip planner for any specific river system in Alaska; instead, the book represents more of an encyclopedic listing of float trips, with some background advice common to all river trips. It's a nice book to have when you're facing a question like: "I want to do a trip, but which river should I choose?" It's also a nice book to keep by your favorite chair, to browse through and to dream about the dozens of quality excursions in Alaska.The river maps are a definite plus and are helpful. Consisting of black and white sketches, they usually cover one column in the two-column page layout of the book, so the maps are oriented longitudally. For orientation, a north-arrow pointer is placed on the map. This means that rivers which run in a mostly-east or west direction are shown with the easterly direction oriented toward the bottom of the map. That's fine I guess, but it would have been nicer if the maps were printed in a more standard fashion: for rivers running predominately east or west, the maps could have been printed so they spanned the width of the page across both columns; for north or south-flowing rivers, the maps could be oriented in the standard longitudal fashion. In either case, the maps would then be oriented with north at the top, east to the right, etc.This leads to one aspect of the book's maps that is a mystery to me: some of the maps for rivers that run in a north or south direction are oriented with north at the bottom (down) of the page. What purpose does this achieve? Why can't the map be flipped around, to be printed the standard way, with the northerly direction at the top? I don't get it...But apart from the map issues, it's the number of errors in the text of the book that presents the most serious deficiency. I have no way of knowing how many mistakes the book contains because my first-hand knowledge - and consequent ability to catch mistakes - is limited only to a fraction of all the waters covered. Nevertheless, when I concentrate on the places well known to me, too many blunders begin to jump out.Some of the faults are very minor, like the description of the Situk River fish where distinct runs of both "steelhead" and "rainbow trout" are mentioned (there are no runs of rainbow trout in the Situk, and the population is very small. All the trout that ascend, or "run" in the river are steelhead).And then are other errors - again relatively minor - that are merely annoying, like places where the text is mistakenly repeated (e.g. page 275) or where a river is misnamed in the middle of the description (page 163), or places where the text is worded in a way that you wonder if some of the author's stream-of-consciousness notes somehow made it into print (page 277).But the most serious mistakes I found involve specific descriptions of some of the rivers. The location of rapids is sometimes misplaced, roads are occasionally misnamed, geographic features are goofed up, and sections of text appear under the wrong heading. Again, I found these mistakes in the small number of rivers that I am familiar with. I am left to assume that the rate of inaccuracy is equally high among the other rivers where I don't have first-hand experience. This begs the question: what good is a reference book when the data is fraught with errors?I checked with the publishers and their web site now offers substitute pages that help correct some of the mistakes. People who already own this book will want to download the pages. Be advised, however, that the substitute pages only cover a portion of the book's faults.To sum up, I think this book might have value to those of us who want to use it as a "dream book" - a sort of a listing of "what's where" and the possibilities for wilderness trips in Alaska. But I urge caution to anyone who needs to rely on the book for cold facts. I would hope that subsequent editions of this book (if it someday gets printed again) will be more carefully researched and edited.

This was a great way for me to understand the basics of what the various rivers in Alaska had to offer in preparation for taking a trip last summer. You'll want to get more detailed info on any given river you go to, but this is great for the initial preparation and helping to choose from between the various rivers.

Not nearly as detailed for the Copper River as Fast and Cold but more up to date.

I love this book, and wish the author would write a sequel, describing more rivers. I have used the Alaska River Guide for several years to plan trips all over Alaska. The maps are great, the trip descriptions fascinating, and the pre-trip preparation information essential, especially for people new to Alaska.

This river guide has been charged with stealing artifacts (tusks) from one of her guided trips in our glorious state. I only give five stars for a book I believe will be relevant or universal throughout time. This book has proven without a doubt that countries or regions that go into serious debt, regardless of what century we are in, will cause financial crises. The book analyzes all aspects from many different regions but more in modern times. The title may be a little misleading as it does not provide equal data of centuries old crises just because we don’t have enough information. Massing large amounts of debt occurred in the Renaissance period and up into today but we only have good statistics about recent debt. Therefore, most of the book discusses the recent phenomena of economic crises. The book is trying to show that economic crises have commonalities regardless of the region but this gets unfocused as the book jumps from region to region and country to country. I wish they would’ve taken one example from the beginning until the crisis was resolved and explain step-by-step what occurred and what triggered the crisis and then mention if that phenomena occurred in other countries or regions. Instead the book has many graphs and charts that are convincing but do not dive into the subject and leave with a shallow understanding. But as I mentioned this book should be read by anyone that wants to understand basic foundations for an economic crisis and should definitely be read by our government and executive branch.

This is a truly stellar book that everyone interested in economic and economic history should read. The level of historical analysis is quite high and the amount of detail is immense. That said, it is not an easy read. This is a dense, complex book. The authors write as academics, not entertainers. If you are looking for an economic version of "Game of Thrones", you won't find it. If you are looking for substance, this is very good starting (and ending) point.The real point of the authors, is that every era thinks "This Time Is Different" and the truth is almost always otherwise. Debt, deficits, and default have been recurring themes throughout human history. They have happened many times before. They will happen many times again. The countries you think will never default, frequently do. Germany is generally regarded as one of the safest creditors in the world (these days). German history suggests otherwise. Greece has been in ruins (economic ruins) for almost 200 years.The idea that Greece was ever a reasonable credit risk was (is) absurd. Yet, Greece could borrow at rock bottom interest rates for years after it joined the Euro system. Even now, Europe's leaders are trying to prevent a final default (wipe out) on Greek debt. History says that they will lose.

Carmen Rogoff is a leading expert on Third World financial crises. Ken Reinhart, former chief economist for the International Monetary Fund, is a top international macroeconomist. Their reputation was tarnished in 2010 when their paper “Growth in a Time of Debt” was found to be not replicable without following their 1. coding error (excluding Australia, Canada and others from the data) 2. unconventional weighting of countries 3. selective/ excluding use of data. (unfortunately GIGO) Questioning their methodology then became generalized (their use of growth regression methodology) which grand scheme “solved” what to this reader looks like a chicken-egg analysis problem.This book was written before their deification by pro-austerity, less-compassionate politicians. This book lays out the data and the small empirically based “aha's”, which investors can use to practical results. And their successful effort in this book is enormous, teasing out reliable historical data, never found before, especially from the Third World. Never underestimate the power of details. I admire this book completely for its precision. And the conclusion I can draw: Caveat Emptor. The future rhymes with the past. Do not confuse causation and correlation.

Seeking the truth of who Moses was. Great read

If you are interested in studying the origins of the Israelites (and the origins of the Hebrew Bible) then this should be one of the books that should be on your reading list. The Israelite history and religion have a lot of connections to ancient Egypt. This isn't a perfect bridge between ancient Egypt and the Israelites but, it builds a good foundation for the research. It's a `must' read for those involved in biblical scholarship.

This book is very well written. The arguments it makes are compelling. It has made me question the foundation of my religious beliefs and to try to frame the value system of religion in some other context. I also recommend "101 Myths of the Bible".

I read this book as a student in Dr. Heath's course at UIUC, then had to study it more thoroughly for qualifying exams, and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the subject (subjects listed below). In the text he explains things clearly and carefully, and makes sure to provide motivation for the topics. It will really help if you haven't forgotten all your linear algebra and have had some programming experience. The programming problems are easiest to complete in Python or Matlab. If you plan to do them, but don't have any experience with Python or Matlab, you can learn what you need to know pretty quickly (which would be easier than attempting them in a language not designed for matrix math). I think the book would stand well on its own even if you weren't taking the course. I would not hesitate to buy other books by Dr. Heath. If one is familiar with the concepts, then they are great, because they skip right to the point, but it is definitely not the greatest if you are trying to learn the basics of the concepts.What is really good about this book, is that at the end of each chapter, it has a list of the built-in library functions that do the algorithms the chapters talk about, in a bunch of different languages (Matlab, maple, etc). Another good thing is that it gives a basic outline of many of the algorithms.

This text reads well, and does a good job covering the important concepts in scientific computing. The only thing I've noticed is sometimes missing specific examples. Sometimes the sample problems are not clear as to what is expected...Overall, its a text that is good to learn from, but maybe not the best for practice(note: i have not yet worked through the computer programming example, these look promising)

This edition is exactly the same the as the US version.Good quality and very nice seller, I get this book really quick.It is much cheaper than the bookstore.100% recommend

Not just a great introduction to the topic but also a great resource for review questions, exercises and computer problems/projects.

This book is a great buy for advanced mathematics and computing theories. However I have heard several people say they don't know how to use the book and can't decipher it. The book itself does not have enough explanation to be able to use it by yourself (in my opinion). But with a good teacher that can explain the small tips that a book will not publish, this book can be a great tool in the learning process.

As a student I have found this book extremely difficult to learn from. I am a junior in mechanical engineering and have already taken classes concerning differential equations, partial differentials and some linear algebra so a lot of the basic concepts of this book are not new to me. The author seems rushed to introduce as many theories as possible into each chapter and misses many of the key qualities that make some of my other text books great learning tools.1. Lack of examples concerning new theories.2. Too many steps skipped in solving examples where the theory was just introduced3. Useful equations not numbered.4. No chapter summary with chapter highlights.5. No chapter equation/useful formula summary.6. No solutions in the back of the book. This makes it very difficult to study by yourself.It is obvious that this book is very comprehensive and that most of what an engineer would ever need to know on Numerical Methods is discussed in some form. However, the "text book" side is lacking and needs a major overhaul to become a great learning tool.
